M83 and Eluvium

does anyone know these bands?..... how would one go about making this kind of music?......... is most of it programmed, or just mostly the beats and drums? would a hardware synth be a must, or does my m-audio midi keyboard do just fine?

I would guess that most of those guys (because a lot of them are just one person) probably use a combination of real instruments and MIDI sequencing. You should be able to do a lot with your M-Audio keyboard, a guitar, and some good software.

A friend of mine does something along these lines. I know he just plugs his guitar through a Boss Delay Station straight into his M-Audio Quattro and into his Powerbook. I'm not sure what software he uses. Check it out here if you want.

have you had experience with reason or sonar? so far it's working great....... but i just wanted a few tips while i'm working on them........
yes i do use a combination, as i am a guitar man mostly, but i love to add the textures of synth on top........ when you record, do you make sure that everything is as programmed as possible, or do you just use a metronome to sync things up? or neither.

I've used Reason Adapted a little bit, just experimenting with it. If you got a version of Cubase, one of the Reason editions, and downloaded ReBirth free from www.rebirthmuseum.com and combined all of that with some live instrumentation, you could probably have a pretty potent little home setup.

My personal experience hasn't extended beyond simple experimentation, though, so I'm afraid I can't be of much help there. If I were going to do that, I would probably determine a tempo and set that up with the metronome in Reason, and go from there.

....i was about to get cubase SE, but i went with Sonar Home Studio instead....... i dunno, i just liked the feel of it more ........ it's alright so far, alittle whismical looking, but it gets the job done. ....... that's exactly what i'm doing at the moment, really mixing MIDI with live guitars and sounds. M83 has been a big influence on me lately.

On "dead cities . . ." it sounds as if M83 uses a lot of 80s synth gear. My guess would be Roland stuff like the Juno (it may even be an alpha Juno). All the drums on that album are obviously programmed and they sound like some kind of mid 80s machine (roland 505, 606, 707 i'm betting). Dunno where the synth string sounds come from, but it's probably from something cheap and cheesy.

If i had to guess, I'd say that, besides the drum machines, a lot of it was probably tracked live and direct. There are really "quantized" sounding parts that I'm sure are sequenced, tho.

Delays are really important for this type of music to get that washy, echoey sound. Lots of effects on the vocals (and then bury them in the mix). A vocoder would be good.

For the fuzzed out guitar, you probably wouldn't have to worry about getting an ultra natural amp sound -- you could get away with using an amp simulator. Then drench it in hall reverbs and delays.

thank you so much.....!! yeah, i'm more influenced by "before the dawn...." the great amient instruments, their warmth........ i should get a better synth...... i don't ask for much, a little juno would probably be perfect, cause you like you said, alot of effects and mixing on top of them anyways......... thanks man.
