M-S placement

maby i've just got it wrong, but....

just like the picts here (different mics)
run the cardi up center
split the fig 8 into 2 tracks, flip one, and hard pan them L and R.
daz about it.

i do it wrong???

I think that's the way to do it without an M-S decoder.

Maybe I should check Harvey's big mic threads.
 
i thought so.......

maby it's the mic's i used, specifically the cardi..... a re27nd (excellent on acu!!!! i promise)

but it's a wide cardi (i believe) and maby that could be to blame for the imageing wierdness??????

nope, just went to ev's website, and it's not a wide cardi.

Sounds like something is wrong...

M/S eliminates LOTS of phase issues. Everything I've recorded (through the M/S circuit of my Octane) sounds great, through monitors and headphones.

Do you use just the M-S pair, or do you have other mics on the kit?

I don't think you have a phasing issue in that clip. As I played it, I was twisting the pan knobs to hear the difference between stereo and mono and I didn't hear that signature drop in high end in mono often associated with phase cancellation.

I mic the kick from both sides, and the snare from the top only. The direction of the snare mic is towards the drummer, same as the M/S pair. The hats and other cymbals, and toms are "seen" by the M/S pair, so I don't need to mic them individually, which also helps eliminate phase issues.

I was thinking of trying some M-S recording over the weekend.
Has anyone used this free plugin.(Vonengo M/S Encoder/Decoder Plugin Ver 1.3)

The m-s methos sounds best to me with a ldc in the mid (I don't have a ribbon....yet)
