Ok I tried splitting the mid and side from my MIX.
I added L and R to make the mono MID
and I subtracted R from L to make the stereo SIDE
All seemed good up to this point.

I then tried to add the MID and SIDE together to get the MIX, but I ended up with about (roughly) 80% of the MIX on the left and only 20% on the right. Crazy!
I checked to make sure everything was totally in phase but still got this.

I flipped the phase of the MID then listened and got the opposite. 80% right and 20% left (roughly).

I thought by adding the MID to the SIDES that I would get the MIX.
Am I wrong? Whats going on?

Eck

ok.

L+R=M and L-R=S

so

S+M= L+R + L-R
S+M= 2L

ok so I was wrong that SIDE + MID = MIX

so what if I then do S-M= (L-R) - (L+R)
S-M= -2R

I dont actualy think Im getting very far with this. so im giving up!

Sorry,

Re-read my post Eck and you'll get it, you're half way there.

M/S processing is mainly useful in mastering when the mixes are in stereo and you want to process things like the vocal separately from the rest of the mix. It can also be used to help widen a mix or fix some phase issues. I can't think of any scenario were it would be very useful for mixing though excluding decoding an improperly recorded M/S track.

Thanks man.
I totally get it now.
Simple (once you know it) yet very cool indeed. :)

Cheers,
Eck

yeah...i think you may have messed up the volume on one of your sides. the phasing won't be perfect if the flipped volumes don't match back up with the originals.

that's a cool idea. you can shape the bass a little bit, and the vocal a little bit.

probably not so much the snare, but i guess that depends on how it sounds.

but..i guess this only comes in handy if i was mastering someone else's stuff
