With the M-box being about $50-$100 more, will I net about the same results with both set-ups. (Pres/conversion and overall sound)

Will the M-Box bypass my junk soundcard (do I need one) and run like a champ?

Does the 2496 and MMP-2 have an advantage due to PCI vs. USB?

Really, am I going to get more for paying more? (taking ProTools out of the equation)

how can you take pro tools out of the equation? its part of the situation dont ignore it.

Im talking Strictly Pre-amps and sound quality.

Say I had a version of Pro Tools and Im only purchasing the M-Box as an audio interface. Or I had Pro Tools to be used in conjunction with the 2496 and Roland.

No, you wont need the soundcard you have now with an M-Box, as it's a USB interface.

I've owned both, and I sold the M-Box.
I like the option of having an external pre, with the options the Roland has.
I dont have to stick with one sound, like I do with the M-Box.
The M-Box offers focusrite, which make alot of mics sound good, but the Rolands pre's IMHO are just better.

You get what you pay for, and you get more options going the route of the Roland.

However, both will give you a nice sound.

cant you set the pres on the mbox to zero so no gain is applied and the sound wouldn't be colored be the pres? and you cant use pro tools without the hardware, except pro tools free.

johnnypraze. what are your reasons for this sort of purchase? that is, exactly how do you plan to use an interface?

...i ask for partly selfish reasons, as i am looking to purchase an interface myself.

I need something to record vocals with.

I think I got my mind made up on the roland and 2496.

AllOrNuthinEnt, thanks for the help.

So not all hardware will work with the different versions of ProTools? I Didnt know that. I thought they had versions for tracking, Like Sonar, Cubase, Cakewalk, etc...

praze, i may not be reading your post right but it seems like your using the name pro tools to cover all recording software. pro tools is a brand just like those others you mentioned. http://www.digidesign.com/

I still want to know if setting the mbox pres to 0 bypasses them

Does Pro Tools only work with DigiDesign hardware?

Thats Why I asked if it worked like other tracking/recording programs...

I know theres TDM and LE but I also thought they had other versions (ie: Gold or Pro, etc...)

Im not familiar at all with pro tools, hence the ignorance...

yeh PT only works with their hardware.except pro tools free which doesnt run on xp. I think the mbox now will work with other software though , could be wrong.
