ok...first of all i don't know ANYTHING about recording, i've read up on it as much as i can but i think i'm limited to what i can learn without trying it out. i was about to buy my first recording equipment and i think i might want a pro tools M box. if anyone thinks these are terrible or a waist of money, please tell me. thanks.

there's been a few posts lately in the Newbies forum and the Computer and Recording forum about going the Mbox route. Search around for those ones and you might get your answer

adamo. ive posted lots of tips on recording in the past year. just search under my name. if you have a pc try the software i use powertracks from pgmusic.com. just try the demo. it comes with very detailed help
to get folks new to recording to get started quickly. its also a suberb value at 49 bucks for 48 tracks. you will learn a lot from the help alone on recording. all you need is a recent pc above 1.3ghz preferably.
if you tell me your pc confign. i'll make further suggestions.
peace.

Pro Tools leaves you sewn in with Digidesign ... which might be fine. But if you want to test the waters a little, just get some software like manning said, a decent little mixer or preamp, and stick an M-Audio Audiophile soundcard in your PC for absolute peanuts. Audiophiles are less than £70 over here now ... probably similar in dollars for you.

ok thanks guys. i went to the music store and they told me the reason the M box was so expensive was because it came with the software. but thanks to some pirates i already have the software. so i think i'm going to take your advice, it definatly saves me money.

you can't use the stolen software without the hardware. the money you're spending on the mbox in the stores is mostly for the hardware. my suggestion....go BUY actual hardware or software. people still try and pirate pro tools when Digi actually gives it to you online!

ok...i know i have to buy hardware, but i dont have the money for an mbox. the guy that the store suggested an audiophile or something but it didnt come with software. what else would i need to get with that?

if you dont have a mixer. yamaha mg a lot like.
as i said before try powertracks multitrack software i use.
if you cant do a hit song in it , you wont with anything.
for 49 bucks wont be beat without spending hundreds more.
if you list your pc confign IN DETAIL i'll make further suggestions.

Well, my cousin is a recording engineer and he suggested i buy an M-audio mobilepre usb, because it suites my needs. so i did, it was cheap enough. It came with Reason software, but i dont know how to use it at all.

My computer's stats are:

Motherboard:AMD 2400+
Processor: sempron 462
Hardrive: seagate 80 gig with a 12 gig partition for songs
RAM: 340 ddr
and my soundcard is integrated into the motherboard, all i know is that it's "6 channel audio"

i just need to know...what the next step is i guess.

Hmmm ... would give you more advice but I'm not really into software pirates

sorry. i'm with noisedude. no need to pirate when you can buy multitrack software for 49 bucks.
