We've had a Tampa here [ along with about 30 other mic pres ] and it's an excellent box. Really nice, open-sounding mic pre with selectable impedance and killer opto compressor. The A/D converter works well. As far as the all-in-one channel strips around $600ish, the Tampa would be a top choice. I'd definitely recommend it.
thanks Dan,
....what about that "temporal allignment" stuff? I think its intention is to make a solid state pre sound more like a tube. What has been your take on that. ....also, you sound like you really like the opto compressor.... Have you used it for bass?
i read the entire review of the Tampa in Home Recording magazine and they said it was more of a "flavor" preamp than a "do-it-all" tool since noise became a factor with the amp when turned up. Overall, my impression from the review was it wasn't a versatile preamp in the studio, but was good at getting a particular overdriven tube sound. fwiw
...i just read in the musicians friend online calalog that theyre selling them for $399. hmmmm ....either an indicator of the quality of the unit, or a great price for a nice pre.
