I'm hoping to choose between the current crop of ~$500/pair active 8" monitors.

I'm building a personal studio / practice room. I play the Bass and sing. I don't expect to produce any award winning demos. I just perform praise and worship music and want to practice and record to share with the other members.

Just want something that will reproduce good for the $ and have some working responce low enough for my bass parts.

I'm also thinking about getting a sub like the Event 20/20 S250 to add some bottom end for bass reproduction.

If I get the sub, could I save some cash and get smaller monitors that might be faster and more accurate for voices and such?

Thanks,

Mark

8" monitors? You mean 8" woofers?
Yorkvilles have 6.5 inch woofers, and i don't know about the event 20/20's.

Yo Mark:

For the money, you won't beat the quality of the Yorkvilles, active or passive. I use the passive but I'm assuming the actives are also a good product. And, for what you are doing, you'll save cash with the Yorks.

Green Hornet :D  :D

The 20/20's have 8" and ?2" drivers. I have used mine to monitor bass while tracking. (seems that was what you were refering to)Never seemed to drive them into cliping. I would'nt really crank them though. I have passives, so I'm not sure how the actives differ. If you are looking for something to mix on, but also be able to monitor the bass through with decent bass, I'd say the 20/20's would do that fine. just be careful. :D And get a good amp if you go with passives. I'm working on that one myself.

Just be careful with the bass guitar, its easy to blow a small set of speakers if you direct inject the bass and aren’t careful with what your doing (levels, limiting, compression…). Untamed bass guit can be ruthless on 6.5 or even 8 inch woofers.

If your micing an amp then your probably not going to have the same trouble.

The M-audio BX8 are in your price range and have an 8 inch woofer.. but I didn’t like them. The events were much better... but the active events run like 700? Passives are like 299, sweet deal if you have an amp sitting around.

I never heard the oft' praised Yorkville’s, but I bet they are more neutral and detailed than the m-audios, but probably a good deal less bass response. The yorkies have overload protection... that should help to keep those 6.5 inch cones in their sockets during an errant bass note!

I thought the events were clearer more detailed and had more depth. It seemed to me that they were a notch up on the quality level. But speakers are very subjective... the only way to tell what is best for any one person is to actually listen and compare...

Ill say this though, for the money the M-audios are a great deal... I wouldn't turn anybody away from them if it fit their needs and budget.

I should have said I prefered the Events over the M-Audios. Dislike is perhaps too strong for a speaker that gives you so much for the money.

Thank's all for your input.

I'd like to hear the Yorkvilles but I don't know who has them in the Portland Oregon area. I heard there where annother brand that sold the same speakers. Was it ART?

Gunther, Have you heard the new Event Tuned Refrence series? They are in the lower price range.

I heard that the Truth's where a good buy also.

Do they all have high pass filters built in so that if I get a sub I could high pass the monitors and save them from bass duty?

Well, usually this 'hi-passing' is done at the Subwoofer.
Connect your board or recorder's Control room outs (L&R) to the sub, and connect the sub " sattelite out L&R" to your monitors.

I bet the new events (the TR-8-Ns) will sound awesome (since they are supposed to be an improvement over the 20/20s which I like a lot). I would definitely recommend a listen to them, they would probably work well for you. They have protection circuitry also, which is a big plus for what you’re doing.

I bet the truths suck ass.
I never heard them... but I bet they do :p. Don't get me wrong, I use Behringer products but I recognize most Behringer stuff sounds like ass. Probably worth a listen though, due to the high performance to dollar ratio Behringer is known for... Just be wary of something that looks good superficially yet deep down does not perform.
You know, I am really curious what people who do use these monitors think of them. Any happy truth owners?

I don’t know how I feel about subs and crossovers and low pass / high pass filters… I think I would suggest finding a monitor that has a flat freq. response down to 40 – 50 hz before I would suggest getting a sub. I think if you’re doing critical work in the bass area, you might want to avoid putting a crossover right in the middle of your critical frequency range… but that’s just my opinion.

Some of the Sub's have a hi-pass out and some (like the Event) are just a through to the full range monitors.
