Ive been using some bx5a's for a little while now, and im not too fond of them. They seem to be fairly lo-mid heavy and VERY bass shy.

I actually had a CD I recroded and "psuedo-mastered" for a band this summer, and I mixed on the Bx5a's. The band decided they wanted a finished product with practically no notice before hand, so I didn't get the chance to listen to my mixes on more systems than just my bx5a's. Well, long story short, the mixes sound fine on the bx5a's, but I mistakenly bumped up the low end on my multiband. I couldn't hear anything wrong on the bx5a's, but as soon as I got the track on a system with a bit more bass response, it was completley overwhelming.

very embarrasing for me.

So here's the deal: I have a qsc usa370 amp just hanging around, not getting used, and I have an opportunity to get some 20/20 passives at a good price. The 20/20 cabs are a bit dinged up, but the woofer and tweeters are in pretty darn good condition.

Should I jump on the deal for the 20/20's, or just stick with the bx5a's?

Thanks for the help guys,
Alex

small room, carpeted, mattress, big arse comforter, + 2'' foam soon.

Dude...you need more than that. 2" foam will do nothing to your room for low frequency absorption. Consider bass traps...HF absorbers...you really need them. I'm sure the BX5's will sound decent to work with then...

The studio I go to in NY has BX-5s......... as the 3rd monitors. He only uses them to make sure the kick drum has enough punch to be heard on speakers will inadequate bass.... that should tell u something.

intersting post. I guess listening to your mixes on several systems and different rooms pays off, but as you stated you didn't have time to do that.

as a hobby-head, i asked the question once of "how do you satisfy all the different types of playback systems?"
It seems its an impossible task as there are so many different setups, PA(live in between breaks), Sub Woofer Home HiFi, Ear-buds, Hi-End, cars, cars with sub woofers, headphones ...etc.

is it the mix or the playback unit?
I notice my alarm clock radio cd player has a 1" speaker and it has nearly zero bass, and mainly 2K and up to about 2.3K. Everything sounds like ASS.

I'd vote jump on the 20/20's the more gear the better! at least you'd have a 8" check...or buy a sub for the BX5's.
