M-audio 24/96 spdif In

I'm sending a master mix from my 2-track 1/4" tape machine through an AD converter (converting analog to digital at 16/44.1 in the converter), then hitting the M-audio 24/96's "spdif In" with the converted digital output from the converter.

Here's my question... Does the 24/96 card receive the digital signal @ 16/44.1 straight? Or does it receive it 24 bit then dither down to 16bit?

My goal is to get from tape to "digital 16/44.1" without any dithering.

your software should request which word length from the interface. What the delta drivers do I've no idea, but I can't really see why they would dither the signal.

ahh, I get it. You probalby just aren't going to be able to capture 16 bit if you're sending the delta a 24 bit digital signal in the first place. Even if it converts it on the fly I can't see why it would add anything.

I'm using wavelab essential... In wavelab I can set the recorder to record @ 16/44. I guess that somehow tells the m-audio card to pull the signal in through the "spdif In" at 16/44?

Actually, I'm sending the delta a 16bit signal from the stand alone converter.

that should work then, I have no idea what to expect if you mismatch word lengths.

You have to use the digital in interfraces to capture audio from them. This may be transparent if you've got the monitor mixer set as the default device, I'm not too sure how it would work. But if you've got the analog ins setup as the default you'll have to deliberately specify the digital inputs in your software.
