Ok I recently bought M audio 1814 interface.. downloaded latest driver and installed it .. but when I connect the device to my computer, my computer cannot recognize the interface..I am using adat optical cable to connect the interface straight into my computer
optical to 3.8mm jack cable..
am I doing something wrong here? if I am, can someone explain to me how to fix this?

??????????! The 1814 is a Firewire interface and connects to a computer by either a 6 way or 4 way FW cable.

It is quite unlikely that your computer HAS a FW port and if it is a laptop, MOST unlikely. If a desktop and you have a spare PCI or PCIe slot you could install a FW card but you must ensure that any such card has the Texas Instrument chipset on it (or one that M-A recommend) . There used to be the option of an Express card for laptops but these are rarely seen on the machines these days.

How did you obtain the interface? If from a retailer you should be able to change it for a usb device.

Dave.

Yup. you cannot connect that way.
You have to go firewire.

The adat is for connecting to another adat device. The interface still needs to talk to a computer via the firewire cable.

Read the manual and install it properly.

No! As Jimmy says, we need your computer details but first of all. DO NOTHING!

With the greatest respect you are all at sea. How did you come to buy an interface the workings of which you have no clue?

Now, installing an AI is usually fairly easy these days but you MUST follow the manual TO THE LETTER! I have downloaded the manual and that looks to be an old AI (does not mention W7) so if you have a Windows 7 PC you will need to go to the M-Audio (or is it Avid?) website and download the correct drivers.

Next thing, and you can do this now. Set a "restore point" on your PC prior to doing anything with the interface. Call it "Pre FWAI" or some such. If you don't know how to set a restore point..Find out!

I am off to me pit soon but will be back about 6am.

"0im bek"
Dave.
