Hi folks, Newbie here, Hope everyone had a great new year!
I am setting up to do speed-metal type home recordings on a very low budget and was wondering if any one has used the Peavey PVi series mic's? I bought one with cable new for $20.
My son Clay is 11 plays guitar and buys most all his equipment, (he is learning allot about where and how to spend his lawn mowing money.)
Can it be used to mic an amp? If so how and where do you position it?
He has a Tube Works TD-752 100 watt amp, 5 peice Drum set, 4 track Fostex XR-5 and about $65 left in his box.
Thanks!
Clay and Gerald

I can't help you with that Peavey mic...

But it sounds disturbing that an 11 year old is operating yard equipment.

I hope he's more careful with a lawn mower than he is in his choice of microphones.:)

When I was 8, my dad asked me If I wanted to mow a couple of strips of his lawn. Like a sucker, thinking that was cool, did it. after I was done with the strips, dad wouldnt take the mower back.

for the next 9 years I was saddled with the job.

The classic microphone for guitar amp miking is the Shure sm57. You may be able to find a used one for $50. IMHO, it will give you a huge improvement in sound over the Peavey.

The classic position for close miking is about 1 foot away from the speaker cabinet, slightly off center. Other folks also use a position a few feet away, sometimes both at the same time. The best thing is to experiment to see what sounds best for you.

One thing to be careful about is that guitar cabinets can get LOUD -- not all microphones like the high volumes.

Some kids could almost repair a lawn mower by the age of 9, and l owned a few rifles and a 22.cal pistol by the age of 11 and was driving at the age of 15.

And now back to the subject of mic's. Clayrock, the Shure SM57 is one of the mic's your son should get, he should be able to get a used one for about $50.

Thanks! I was thinking there was a problem, the mic sounds great
with voice but in front of the "loud" amp it does not sound right.

Damn, clayrock... I just realized my post was of absolutely no value to you, as a newbie.

Get the Shure SM57 used, like the others said.

Cheap mics can't handle the Sound Pressure Level of a cranked up guitar cabinet, so it's not that particular mic... it's the model.

Better start shopping for a 42" mower, too. Cause once all this "Gear Acquisition Syndrome" or, GAS (as it is commonly referred to) kicks in, you're gonna need it.:D
