The vocals are still low. The vocal level in the first verse is close to where I'd like to hear it. And the first part after the break is even closer. The spoken parts could use some boost also.

I REALLY like the instrumental mix you have now listening in my headphones. It's dynamic, full and bright. But the vocals need to shine a lot more to complete the picture.

It sounds like you have put quite a bit of work toward this mix and it has yeilded some excellent results. The cello bits sound just great for example.

I like the amount of reverb on the mix.

There might be a tad too much reverb on the vocals, pushing them away from the rest of the mix.

I think if you could get the vocals as loud and defined as they are after the break they would be great.

This continues to be my favorite tune - I was singing it to myself for a few hours while doing yardwork yesterday.....:D

Bulls Hit - I didn't read your post until after I uploaded the mix - let me know if there's still a scoop in the mids.

I might be totally wrong, but I don't think he meant "mids". I think he meant the "Middle" as in, nothing seems to be panned in the middle. I hope he'll correct me if I'm wrong, though.

I really love the cello/strings on this...I too think the vocals may just a bit buried in this, I don't detect the hiss others have commented on, but I have been tracking with headphones the last few hours so my ears may be fried a bit ....this reminds me of the Moody Blues alot.....very interesting song...I dig it!!

I wish you'd turn the vocal up 5 db still. It's such a cool lyric, but it's damn hard to make out.

Everything else sounds dreamy and cool to me. Love it.

Bulls Hit,
I think I've addressed most issues except the percussion - didn't get to that as my recording comp downstairs went blank & it now just bips at me, (luckily I'd saved most stuff to an external hard-drive).
How close am I now?
Just as an experiment I stuffed around with the panning on the spoken vocal - to give the impression of snatches of conversation from diff periods of time - a bit of a tug I know but does it work?
Bum - just did a straem test & there's still an ultra quiet section.

the vocals are still too much in the background they could come up with a couple of dB.
i think panning those spoken bits works though i would make the panning less extreme and also work with the levels.
vocals could do with some deessing here and there.
a tad too much verb on the vocals to my taste.

this is the best mix i heard from this so far

I really can't lift the vox much higher without the essing become a huge problem. This mix
http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=4214178&q=hi
has de-essing on the vox & quite heavily so but you'd not know it.
Panning has been reigned in on the spoken section as suggested.
The vox are louder but not much - there's a more even run at least.
I raised the percussion & lowered it almost back to where it was - not very exciting stuff and it started to be a bit like dog's balls.
Suggestions re the essing? I've used spitfish - normally a superb freebee but doesn't cut it on thsi. Any other free VSTs or Dlls that'd work for cakewalk pro audio 9.3 with a wrapper & do a better job?
Oh, that noise just before the vocal phrases is the compressor - Blockfish - but at this stage I have no option but to use it for a bit of a boost as I can't normalise the vocals or even amplify them due to the hiss etc. that is inherent in the vocal track.

I'm still of the opinion that the vocals need a couple more dbs. The background music is still good and needs no additional work IMO.

I do everything on analog gear so I'm not familiar with plugins yet, thus nothing to suggest. I can hear where the esses are inhibiting your ability to increase the volume. Sorry I can't be much help - maybe someone here can chime in with suggested plugins....

I've been listening to a version I downloaded on 6/30, which I very much like. The vocal is a little low, but it sounds mysterious that way and the mix sounds balanced to me as far as EQ and overall sonority of the parts.

I might be totally wrong, but I don't think he meant "mids". I think he meant the "Middle" as in, nothing seems to be panned in the middle. I hope he'll correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Yah I was referring to the panning. I still think there's room to bring the vox up a couple

Hello, hello, it's good to be back x2
(my 1st international concert was gazza Glitter - nasty now - at the Horden Pavillion Sydney, '72 or 73).

Here's an update - vox louder. All else pretty much as it was.
I cloned the vox, rolled off the bottom & top ends, squished it with a heavy limiter and then adjusted the vol.
I think it's worked in that, to my ears, the ssssssssses haven't increased.
The vox are louder than I like but that's me.
I'm mixing to your ears folks, what say you?

Better Mix

The vocals are much better on this latest mix (for me :)). I can hear them throughout the verses and the spoken part (the spoken part is an excellent touch BTW).

:):D:):D

The cello and ac gtr sound good and add a lot of character. Overall I prefer the 6/30 version over the latest, if that identifies it accurately. :)

The new mix is cooler than the previous one. The vox are understandable more.

Hi Folks,

The link will take you to a mix with the full Faderbug rejuvenated vocal track.
http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=4214178&q=hi

Terry said that the flute/recorder is slightly out of synch so I'll need to adjust that when he gives me the necessary details.
I've followed most recommendations and the vox are quite clear. I hope it meets expectations.
Tim, I know what you mean. I like the mystery as well but this is an excercise in mixing to meet a panel's preference & reference.
I've saved most previous mixes though I'll have to find exactly where as all mixes prior to today aren't in their designated folder. I'm a tad perplexed by that but have saved each sa\tage of the project's settings on an external harddrive along with a bundle everytime I added new audio.
Many thanks to all for suggestions thus far. Particular thanks to Faderbug for his ressurrection/rejuvenation shuffle with the vocal track.
This has been the longest, hardest tussle so far. I look forward to it's completion.

Best mix (for me) so far. The vocals are right where I like them and they are nice and clear. I think that when you remix for the flute/recorder you bring it up - it's too low right now. The increased volume on the vocals has really improved the story telling aspect of the song. Again, for my taste, this is coming along very nicely...:):D:):D

This last mix is great - nudging that flute/recorder solo up did the trick. Any update on the Royal Artist? :)

I feel like im listening to Bob Dylan at the beginning of the song. LOL. It is a cool song with some great aux instruments. I like it alot. Its really interesting to listen to.

nice one,

-jD
