Invest in at least one SM-57. There have also been some recent posts on this kind of subject, like mic placememnt-check them out.

I really need tips on the best way to mic a guitar on a fostex 4-track. I have a pretty large amp, it's a Kustom 200 watt head with 2 cabinets. Each cabinet has four- six and a half inch- speakers in it. The only mic I have is a V-Tech dynamic VT-1030, it's a 600 ohm unidirectional. The sound I want isn't really too low range, it's lighter with distortion. When I do play it clean I like a lower sound. Thanks, LUKE

I don't know if it's the best way, but a starting point is:
1.to get your guitar tone to where you like 2.pick a speaker and position the mic 6-8 inches away from it, with the head of the mic pointed at the outer edge of the speaker picked.

Try moving the mic to different positions too; you might come across something you really like. Good luck.
