Looks like I may have been tracking all wrong...

I noticed today my VU meter on my preamp has two scales one says DBFS and the other says DBu...

On the analog scale -12DB is a long way from -12DB on the digital one.

Then there is a button that allows me to switch between Analog & Digital (I assume the button has something to do with the light readout on the meter).

This makes me wonder if I have been tracking too damn loud so...

Which scale should I be setting my levels by DBFS or DBu?

-12dBfs is a pretty good place to have the "meat" of your levels...

I'm still a little confused...

Heres a picture to show what i'm talking about...

Sorry I know this is should be simple....

Get your peaks about "yellow" and you'll be fine.

Are you coming out of the preamp digitally or analog?

I think the meter button is broken...

I pushed it to green for digital and left everything at the same levels and watched the readout on the meter it stayed the same.

If the meter is not broken that makes what Farview said about -12dbfs being 0dbu wrong and according to the meter reading 0dbu is = to -20dbfs...

Making -12dbfs equal to +8dbu over unity which would mean I'm tracking too loud right?

Can you see where the confusion is comming from here?

Then you should use the digital scale and track so the meter hovers around -12dbfs
