looking for the perfect mic cords

granted that they aren't too expensive! I am wondering if anyone has opinions on what the best affordable studio mic cord out there is. I'm wondering about the differences between Mogami and Canare and the like.

I was under the impression that Canare wiring with Neutrik connectors are pretty damn good. What do you think? Let's hear it!

FYI, it's "cord", "chord" is a completely different thing.

My only advice is, don't buy it cheap, it won't last as long.

Ive stuck with Monster and Mogami...never had a problem with either.

can you solder? I got a bunch of Neutrik connectors and a roll of decent quality cable, and some silver solder, and I've made a bunch of them. It's not extremely cheap, since the Neutriks can cost $3-5 each, and the cable can be as much as $1 a foot (so a 20 foot cable could cost $30 at the top end - but you can definitely get better pricing in bulk), but once you get the soldering part down you feel pretty confident about the cables you're using - also, custom lengths are obviously not an issue.

You can burn the shit out of your self, of course.

I'd go with Mogami or Canare. Either one are good quality, low oxygen copper. Go with nickel connectors and stay away from Gold!

You don't want to go cheap, but you don't want to over-spend either. Monster cable is snake oil. They have a good sales pitch, but there are simple scientific principles they just don't adhere to, and give the public mis-information about signal, connector materials and quality, blah, blah. Blue is kind of guilty of the same thing, but at least they don't charge as much as Monster and their cables are extremely durable!

I saved alot by buying the leftover spools of mogami at the MARS auction when they closed...I paid about 18 bucks for about 200 feet of it.

I live 4 miles from MXL/Mogami.

I should go root though their dumpster on occasion.:D

Not a bad idea...they might even throw out misprinted cable and such...when I was a kid I went into a funfactory bin...and pulled out a trashbag full of prize tickets...and cashed them in...lol.

if anyone could provide links to good quality canare bulk cable and neutrik connectors I would be very appreciative. Thanks guys.

I get my parts from Markertek, and I use Canare and Mogami cable with either Neutrik, Canare or Switchcraft ends.

The Neutrik XLR's are the best, the RCA Canares plugs are the best and for 1/4" they are all good although sometimes Neutrik is too wide to fit in some gear.

For mic cables I'd go with Mogami and Neutrik ends. Or use Canare 5 conductor wire for star quad wiring. I'd choose Mogami because I like the conductive rubber they use. I made a thread on making 1/4" unbalanced cables:
https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=294090

I've been using these cables near 20 years and I don't think any have failed, plus they're cheap.

so many good suggestions. Keep in mind, this is my first batch, so I am probably going to experiment more in the future :)

On a side note, do you guys prefer gold or silver or nickel connectors? I'm thinking of getting the neutrik NC3MXX and NC3FXX connectors, but the silver ones (as opposed to gold). Should I get something else instead?

thanks

hmmmmmmmm

EWI Cables

I highly, highly recommend EWI cables. Not expensive, and great quality so far. I forget what everybody else said, but I only went with them after seeing them recommended on this site.

I recently got some 15' cables since 25' was a bit much for my needs. It's amazing how much lighter my rig is now. I was shooting for 9'-12', but no mogami's in that size at guitar center. I still want some better connectors, the ones on the mogamis seem a bit plastic. And I was picking up a radio station at one event, which seemed to be more cable than mic.

I make my own.

Canare Star Quad + Neutrik XLRs. I don't remember the part number, but they're the ones you can get color coded sleeves for.
