OP, wheely is right. It's not about rules but preference.
If you're dead set on live or hardware processing, then fair play.
Most recommend against it these days because the disadvantages outweigh the advantages, in my opinion at least.
I think the idea is a bit of a throwback from analog media, live tracking, big mixers and racks of outboard effects.
Some still like that discipline/novelty and I can respect that, but for me personally, I remove anything from the chain that I have the potential to balls up!
