OP, wheely is right. It's not about rules but preference.

If you're dead set on live or hardware processing, then fair play.
Most recommend against it these days because the disadvantages outweigh the advantages, in my opinion at least.

I think the idea is a bit of a throwback from analog media, live tracking, big mixers and racks of outboard effects.
Some still like that discipline/novelty and I can respect that, but for me personally, I remove anything from the chain that I have the potential to balls up! :p

Yep.

I want the outboard processing so my girls can experience immediate feedback. Locking them into manipulating a DAW may frustrate them and turn them off. I personally... as an ex-PC geek... take to that like a duck to water but they don't. Hopefully we'll end up with the best of both worlds.

Pretty much any piece of outboard gear nowadays is essentially nothing more then a computer with a specialized interface anyway.

Steeno and wheelie are talking good sense. There are no definite rules and what works for me may not work for you. I'll say that common wisdom is to record your tracks raw and then process as necessary to get them to fit together into a song. However, using the Livetouch thing is similar to using a mic; you record with one mic only realize later that it doesn't fit the vocalist, you have to go back rerecord with a different mic.

For the focusrite, not sure which is the next model up. Maybe it's the 8i6. I have the 2i2 and know that it doesn't have a mix knob which can be frustrating. It's not my only interface and I use it very seldom, so it is not a problem for me. But for someone who might use it all the time, especially someone new to recording, they will wonder how others are tracking to playback channels without a hitch. To me, focusrite made a big mistake not including the mix knob on the 2i2.

Focusrite Scarlet 18i20!!! I may be selling my USBPre 2 and going over to the Scarlet side.

Thanks for all the info everyone! I'm hoping to have everything in by mid next week. I did end up buying the VLT, but I do realize we may not end up using it for recording unless it happens to work well with us (or we use it in the dry configuration described by wheelema). It will only really be myself and my brother recording, and we sound very similar. So if we can get a nice sound using the VLT that works for us, we may end up using it in the way first described, but if not, I like the idea of being able to use it live as well. Either way, there is so much to learn and you guys have been great (as has this board in general). I will keep you guys updated!

Great stuff. You know your options and in time you'll know your gear and preferences.
That's what it's all about.

OOOOhhhh, do the hokey cokey! **everybody!**

Just found the TC manual. The usb only does updates and MIDI so it is not an AI at all. It DOES have spook juice! (was worried about that)

Off the wall suggestion! Split the mic and record one channel "dry" and one with bells and whistles?

In fact if the OP was to get an NI Ka6 the Voice box could feed the 3/4 line ins and the mic split go into mic input 1. Then there is always the ability to use the box post tracking and "re amp" the takes.

Dave.

Correction!
The TC voice thing IS an analogue to digital converter but not a D/A so you still need an AI!

It also does not run its own ASIO drivers so latency might be quite poor.

Dave.
