Looking For Neoprene

Shopping at Home Depot the other day I ran across a roll of rubberish material used to put under bathtubs. The sales clerk was familiar with the term neoprene and he believed that was the right stuff, but he thought I was crazy when I said I wanted to hang it on my walls. Does it sound like I found the right stuff? Is there any difference between this and the Sheet Block that Auralex sales (besides a couple hundred dollars)?

Clerks at Home Depot here in Canada look at you real funny if you mention open-cell neoprene. They don't carry it in any of their stores - most don't even know what it is.

I had to get mine from a local Rubber Gasket company. And it ain't cheap stuff...

I'm not familiar with the Auralex product you mention, but I do know that neoprene is most commonly used in soundproofing as a sandwich layer between two mating surface that you wish to decouple. If, for example, you have a room within a room, there will inevitably be points of contact with the two framing systems (if not, you're a wizard!). These points would have a layers of neoprene sandwiched between the contact point.

A source for FREE rubber!
Most power companies (I work for one) use orange rubber insulating blankets as a personal protective device when working on energized circuits. They are 36" x 36" usually and approx 3/16" thick. These blankets are tested periodically and the ones that fail the electrical tests are disposed of. I have taken several and cut them into 2" strips which I will be gluing to metal studs before sheetrock is attached for a modest mixing room I'm building. Check with their salvage dept. or directly with their glove testing dept.
