Say Something Smart!
I need a stick of PNY PC100 256MB RAM badly!
I'm only running 256 right now, and I need to double it.
I know I can get it from Staples for about $75, does anyone know where I can get it cheaper?
It needs to be PNY and PC100.
I checked eBay and all I can find is PC133.

P.S. Does it matter if it's not PNY? That's what I have in there now, will there be compatibility issues?
 
It's never mattered for me, but hey you could have a finicky motherboard.
 
Finding the right sdram can be a little tricky these days. The brand and speed of memory isn't a big deal as long as it's compatible. Basically any computer less than 1GHz probably needs low density memory. Most of the really good deals you see will be high density. When you buy a high density 256 MB it will only show 128 or maybe not work at all.
Looking around on Pricewatch, the cheapest true low density 256 MB I've seen was $65, so $75 isn't too bad if it's the real deal. Low density is alot more expensive than high density these days. Alot of places claim low density on a price but then have the Via/AMD kt133 only disclaimer. (ie high density) I still find trying to find the real stuff confusing and I've been buying tons of stuff like this for my biz for almost 10 years...
 
Their "Important Announcement" is the biggest load of crap that I've heard in awhile. All memory is backward compatible. You also dont need to have exact matching sticks. That's just a ploy to get people to shell out extra cash .

Or shoot it down?

I couldn't see a manufacturer doing that to the consumer...it's on the Staples website too...

i use pc133 in my pc100 pcs no problems bub don't believe the hype pc133 is backward compatible oh but like they others said it will only run as fast as your pc can

When they refer to PC133 at office stores they are referring to high density memory. This may work in your machine but it will most likely show half it's size or not work at all. If a machine can accept high density then it can accept both high and low density memory.
The easiest way to tell if you can use hi density is how much memory your can machine accept: If it's 512 per slot then it can take high density. If it's 256 per slot, then low density. Of course I've seen acceptions to these rules and there are some computers that can run hi density even though their specs would suggest they can't.
There is a difference in types of sdram memory. There is PC133 low density memory and there can just as easily be high density PC-100. The general rule these days at the office store is PC-133 = hi density, whle PC-100 = low density. Things get really confusing if you buy on places like price watch. Been burned several times trying to buy low density only to find they shipped me high density.

That's DDR. Totally different type of memory and about half the cost of low dentisy sdram. On crucial's site, the stuff that will work (32x64 sdram type) is $88 per 256 MB module.
 
DAFFYDRUNK, glad you clearified that. As a matter of fact, I just had a friend buy a 512 stick of PC-133 just to find out when he put it in, it only registered 256 on his machine. :(

That's a real bummer.
It could also be the fact that the slots won't hold 512MB. I'm pretty sure mine max out at 256MB, so if I stuck a 512 stick in there, it would only see 1/2 of it.
