Hello from the Middle East!

I am looking to buy an entry-level, laptop-based recording system when I return from my current deployment. I don't get to a computer every day, but I'd like some feedback on what I'm planning to buy. Here's what I'm looking at:

-Apple MacBook (with 2.1GHz Intel Duo Core processor, 1.5 GB RAM, 120GB/5400 RPM Hard Drive, and SuperDrive)
-Mark of the Unicorn 8PRE 16x12 FireWire Audio Interface
-Cubase SE (already own this, am familiar with it, and like it a lot)

Please give me some feedback on any of these items or any of these items together. Any comments, suggestions, etc. is appreciated.

Lost in the Middle East,
Metal Marc

P.S. I'm posting this for Marc because he's having a bit of problem posting...but he can read replies so please post answers here. Thanks!

Cubase SE (all versions) is not a Universal Binary app and will not work on an Intel Mac. You'll either have to move up to Cubase 4 or go with something like Apple's Logic Express.

Thanks for that info. That would have sucked in a big way if I hadn't known that.

Anyone out there reccomend any PC laptops in the under-$1,300 range?

The biggest factor I have found with laptop recording on new PC systems is Vista. I run a MOTU 8Pre with my Toshiba A205-S4577 and it runs flawlessly.

The main problem I have found is that Vista is an absolute resource hog! I would definitely go with at LEAST 2GB of ram on PC if you plan on doing any full band projects. I love my laptop, it isn't as good of specs as the apple you mention, only a 1.73 duo processor, but it has not caused me any problems.

The 8Pre is also great, love having the extra 8 ins via ADAT, and there is nothing I can say I dislike about it.

You do realize you can still run Cubase SE on a MacBook if you're using Boot Camp and XP, right?

I have no intentions of ever buying another Windows/PC laptop again now that all Intel Macs can run XP/Vista. As soon as my Gateway laptop kicks the bucket, it will be replaced with a MBP.
