Why so serious?
Fenders cost too much. What's the best brand for the money.? I want a maple neck and a whammy bar.

Fender 60th Anniversary Commemorative Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar

Only $499.00 @ GC. Anything wrong with these?

I think they're called 'Squires'. :D

Pretty much your standard MIM strat. It says Fender on it so I guess that must make it a Fender. If I recall I think that is the silver one with slightly better pickups. I wouldn't count on using the whammy bar much if you want it to stay in tune. Even the Americans won't stay in tune even with just locking tuners. I have several strats and all but one are blocked.

I'm tempted to try a high end Floyd Rose with the roller bearing nut and locking tuners one of these days.

Buy a used, mid nineties, made in japan strat. I swear by them. You can find them at the local guitar store for about $400.

New fenders suck anyway.

Tanglewoods are dirt cheap over here.

I`ve had a few in my store, I normally play the real thing.
I thought I sounded allright, but was a dream to play.
Way nicer than the Squier cheap models.

I don't think anyone makes these "stratocaster" type guitars anymore. :p

seriously, there's only like 400 trillion models to choose from. its crazy.
GO Squire....used if you don't have any money. There's no reason everyone can't have a Fender guitar these days.
The Squire-Strat made in INdonesia is dealer cost $59-69, you might have to haggle 'em down from $89.

You said you can't afford a Fender...the Fender Squires Affinity Series go for around $100?

If you can go without the tremelo, and easy $79 on the brand new 51' Fender Squire Affinity MII (made in indonesia).

check this out! Around $129!!!

Check out the Ibanez RG series, and as is common see if you can find one from the 80's. I've desired an RG550 for awhile now, it looks like a strat but has humbuckers a single coil and usually a floyd rose locking tremolo. The neck is built for speed also, way better than some squier necks.

Best thing is that most are less than $500 some even for $300.

yamaha makes a fine fat strat that shouldn't set you back more than $300, the pacifica 112.
unfortunatly : no maple necks.

I agree with hatemail,,,
Used Ibanez rg series guitars,, fast as fuck necks, great pups, and liscened floyd rose locking trem,,,,

Or if you can find one,,,, Washburn KC 90 series ,,,, same spec but with seymour duncans all round, floyd locking trem and a neck to die for !!

Why waste money on a squire when you can get so much more out of another well proven, respected strat shaped jap beast,,,, used condition you should be able to get either of these for under £160,, work that out in dollars, and the fact that usa will have a much bigger stock of used models than over here in the uk !!!

the reason for mentioning the cheap Squires was the OP mentioned Fenders are too expensive, so some of us assumed he was in the $100 range.

The Indonesia made Strat-type Squire is around $59-69, the higher end China or Korean made are $125 to $169 so thats like almost 4qty of these versus one $300-$400 guitar.

I've seen Highway 1's for around $400-500 (I bought one for $531 out the door brand new with case)...so if thats too much as the OP mentioned..

$59 to $159 range. There's SAGA kits too. A friend made a awesome frkn Gibson LP copy, it was seriously a great playing and sounding guitar. A person offered $350 for it, and it only cost $129 not including a stain and polish job.

I guess a used Squire can be had for $35?

He's probably thinking fingerboards.

I've got an Ibanez RG ('87 I think... could never identify it) and a Peavey Tracer custom '89. Both have double locking tremolos, the peavey has one humbucker and two singles, the RG has two humbuckers and one single. Set up properly, the trems are pretty decent and won't detune the strings, and I like the tone on them better than a strat, personally. Plus they're both 24 frets. I don't really use the top two frets much, but for some reason it makes me happy. At least I'm easy to please :)

I've played on similar yamaha's and they weren't that bad either.

I don't think you need a strat to get a strat sound. I also feel that a strat copy is better than a squire any day.
