Looking for a particular sound

Lately, I have been noticing a very cool electric guitar tone that I've been trying to figure out how to get. It's pretty clean, very "stringy" and percussive, with a little crunch -- kinda trashy sounding. I'm thinking that it's probably a very small Fender (silver face?) cranked. It's used in a lot of songs picked for car commercials.

The song "Ride" from the Vines has a little more overdriven version of the sound I'm talking about

Any thoughts?

Maybe a Fender Princeton chorus with the presence set high, limiter on just a little, gain about a third to a half, reverb up, treble up, mid up, bass about half, and the volume up about two thirds (chorus depending on preferance)
I set mine like this, plugged in an Ibanez RG170 and got pretty cloce to the sound you described but I'm sure other amps will give you a similar sound but since you mentioned small Fenders I thought I'd give it a try with mine.

My guess is that it is probably the guitar (pickups) that are responsible for the sound. I'm not familiar with the tunes you mentioned but your description sounds like it might be Danelectro pickups. In any case the pickups are what really give a distinctive tone. An amp will do it as well but not to the same extent.

edit: they might be D'Armond pickups as well.
