I have the Tascam FW-1884 and I love this thing! The pres in it are clean, it has huge head room and has 18 i/o's (using 8 channels of adat). I would mos def recommend for a higher end sound at a cheap price (used).

Super interface I am sure DSB but it's FUSSYWIRE! Virtually gone from PCs now (and some macs!) .

Dave.

I recently bought a M-Audio M-Track plus its the best audio interface i've ever used i hightly recommend it

and some macs!

Thunderbolt is directly compatible with firewire. I'm pretty sure the entire mac range has thunderbolt right now.
Point taken though, with regard to PCs at least.

Works great with 8.1 on my pc. I also use the RME ff800 and have no issues with it on windows 8.1

Well, I wouldn't say it's gone. Still a ton of stuff out there using firewire. My day job has me dealing with firewire cards and drivers ad nauseum. Still a lot of audio interfaces using it too.

I would not presume to argue with you sir! My point was that new, affordable PCs do not come with FW any longer. In fact in this part of the world they never did. I did a swoop around my local PCWorld a few years ago and did not find a single desktop with FW and only about 10% of laptops so equipped and they were the very top priced jobbies.

Virtually all the major interface manufacturers have either replaced their FW models or brought out a USB equivalent.

I am not knocking Firewire as a protocol (tho' it WAS a PITA to a lot of people about 5 years ago!) simply saying that if a noob goes for FW they will not be able to use it on hardly any other computer.

I just wish the AI Men would get their corporate fingers out ref USB 3.0! RME seem to be the only ones bothered?

Rock on,
Dave.

I would have to assume, 2.0 has enough throughput for audio that 3.0 just doesn't bring anything better. I would guess Thunderbolt is as much about marketing as it is advancement. Which is Apple's forte'.

Yes, I have seen that said before. I don't agree, nobody ever said FW800 was an overkill!

But even so, one good reason for a USB 3.0 interface is the near doubled bus power.

Dave.
