If that's the case then check affordableaudio.com. He is a Yorkville dealer, Yorkville distributes Apex mics. The guy will quote you at 60% of list + shipping, and he posts the MSRP list on his web site so you can see for yourself. I think that puts the Apex 210 at about $150 to my door.

CORRECTION: I just checked the list, and the 210 would be about $210 shipped. The 205 would be about $125 shipped.

Another clarification:

Just 10 minutes ago I got a quote from Eric at fullcompass.com on the Apex 210 ribbon for $153. That aint bad.

I incorrectly stated in an earlier post that this price came from affordableaudio.com

I haven't tryed it.... but as far as cheap....How about a ribbon for a hundred bucks?

Search - APEX 205.

I might have to get one just to see if it can be used.

I'm afraid I don't have the cash for a really good pre amp to push it up without getting noise though.

If anybody has used one of these I'd like to hear what they have to say.

I'll be able to tell you a little bit in a couple weeks.......I pulled the trigger on that $153 dollar Apex 210......

...I have the Apex 205...I would describe it as being the ribbon-mic equivalent of the MXL V67...very nice, solidly-made, inexpensive mic which works well on vocals as well as instrument miking (great on horns)...you can purchase the Studio Projects VTB-1 Preamp which will give you up to 75dB of gain (by cranking the output gain control, but lay off the tube drive for a ribbon mic)...it will do a very decent job of driving a ribbon mic...for $200 you can get both the 205 and the VTB-1...great little intro to "Ribbon Mics 101"...

isn't the apex 205 the same thing as the shinybox 46? at about 2/3 the size of the apex 210 (which is the same as the shinybox 23) I'd guess that the 46 = the 205. From what I understand about the 205 the reason it took a long time to ship is because of a legal problem between apex and nady. However the 205 in other forms (such as the shinybox 46) has been available for a while without the legal ramifications. I think the apex 205 is like $100 at long and mcquade in vancouver, could be a bit off about that. But if it's the same as the shinybox 46 then it's actually better sounding than the apex 210 which costs at least 50% more, so, you know, why buy a 210 when the cheaper 205 sounds better?

Also, I've heard a lot of people say that if you remove the inner mesh grilles from either of these cheap ribbons it will sound better, less compressed, better highs, so that seems like a freebie way of improving the sound. The theory is that the manufacturer added lots of extra wind protection layers so people wouldn't blow the ribbon to pieces. Obviously that's not the goal of a ribbon mic, so use a pop filter and get rid of the extra mesh layers in the mic. It might lower the spl handling a spec as well but who cares if it sounds way better for vocals etc.

That's my next purchase after I'm finished modding my apex 460 tube mic with some capsule modifications to clean up the high range and raise the resonance peak a bit.

Cheers,
Don

Well depends on your budget

Octava makea a cheep one that can be moded very easily.

Nady make some in exspensive ones as well.
Of coarse I will say the Karma K6.

All just depends on how much you wanna pay.

Everyone has an opinion on what they like and all mics sound different to different people. It all comes into factor of personal tastes. If this is your first ribbon I would say by something inexspensive maybe on ebay and play around with it. Then slowly move up.

Then you can always go for soem of the top brands as well.

False premise. The 205 doesn't necessarily sound better than the 210. It depends on what you want. I sold my Nady RSM-2 (which is the same as the 210) to get an AEA R92, and now I miss it a lot because the Nady is the best glockenspiel mic I've ever used, and I record a lot of glockenspiel. Therefore, I'm not interested at all in the 205, but I'm very interested in getting either a Shinybox 23 or a Apex 210, or maybe even another Nady RSM-2.

Anybody have any info about that new ribbon from CAD? (Trion I think the line is called)

On an unrelated note, does anyone here use any of the older B&O ribbon mics? I scope those out on eBay occasionally and they seem to sell for around $600 give or take.

The CAD Trion ribbon is a very nice ribbon, with a somewhat hotter output than its competitors.

I recently bought the Stellar (= Alctron) RM-4 ribbon mic from kidvybes and I am suprised how well it works, expecially on woodwinds and brass. Its output is suprisingly hot, too, so there is no need for an ultra-clean pre. Its not as detailed as condensors or dynamic microphones, but smooth as hell and rather dark sounding, which can be a nice color. The figure-8 pattern adds some nice room ambience and openes the sound in a nice way. After I heard that mic, I sold my Rode NT2-A. You can find these mics on Ebay for $150.-

karma k-6!

very much digging the karma k-6 ribbon. i play electric guitar most of the time, and i am amazed at how it made my crapulent ovation acoustic (which was left in the trunk of my car for a couple of months through the changing of seasons (don't ask)) sound like a real acoustic guitar. i did a side by side of this mic and the k-58 through my mackie onyx preamps (also dig these incidentally) if anyone is interested in hearing them. :)
