Yes, it is their song, but you aren't paid to be as confused as them!

If you absolutely can't get them to take their sound down I would also take a direct dry signal off of the guitar so I could send it through an amp simulator after the guitarist passed out.

What they don't know doesn't hurt them.

Well...That was my next plan. I dont have an A-B switch so what would be a good alternative? I thought about guitar>mixer>directout to soundcard and main out to their amp. Think that would work or will they hear something strange with their tone?

If you are being paid to do this I wouldn't decieve the band that way. Try different mic techniques first. If they still don't like the sound have them try toning back the distortion "just as a test". If they don't understand that getting a good recording is all about experiment then they get what they get.

The snare and toms are all mic'd with Audio Technica mics...ATM29HE's...and I have a beta 52 on the kick. OH's are matched JM27's. Although I dont have any 57's, I have a friend with a couple and i have used them in the past. I have beem more satisfied with the ATM's on both drums and guitars. The toms are mic'd about 2 inches above the skin. The mic is parallel with the side of the drum and is actually not even over the drum itself...it points down the side of it...I will do this a little differently once my -20db attenuators come in. The snare mic is about 3 to 4 inches off the head...it sits out around the rim but is pointed at the center of the snare. No compression on the snare...just about a 3.5db boost from 5khz to 12.5khz.

The thing with the kick....good or bad??

Distortion at 2:17....the only thing there that i can hear that you might be talking about is just the tail of the last note on the lead track...sounds a little like feedback. If there is something else...im not hearing it.

Ok...im gonna give this one more shot...im gonna drop the mids in the guitars some more and try to get the kick to stand out and sound a little better. Ill try to post another mix tonight...

sorry...Cellar PMed me asking about my mics and I listed all the ones I used on the drums. I also used the ATM's on the guitars and sometimes i use an EV Cobalt C04, not as often though. the beta 52 on bass. On vocals, I used an SP B1 for the lead vocals and an AT3035 for the screaming vox...

man, I thought the first one sounded better... I'm not really hearing this problem with the mids, the guitars sound pretty "scooped" to me, but my ear isn't that well-trained.

The whole mix just sounds sterile to me, especially the guitars, and I'm thinking you can't fix that guitar with EQ... What kind of amp is the guitar player using?

well...as far as the mids go...i can hear it a little...but to me its not as bad as others are hearing it. to me...im hearing the most trouble with making the kick stand out. I can get it to stand out with no problem, the problem is to get it to stand out and still sound good..

What do you mean by sterile? there are 3 rhythm tracks going and one lead track. One rhythm track is played through a Line 6 POD Pro to a marshall 120 X 2 valvestate power amp and on to my Fender 2 X 12 Cab. This track has a lot more low end, very little gain. The other 2 rhythm tracks and the lead track are through a marshall tube amp (not sure of the model) and it still uses my Fender cab. I think these tracks are where most of my trouble is. TONS of distortion, very thin. In an earlier post, i mentioned having trouble getting the guitar player to adjust his settings for the recording...well...these are his tracks. The sound we are hearing in the room is what he wants to hear on the recording...but all of us know it doesnt work out quite like that.
