i know most of you may know this but for those of you who don't this is for you!

i was messing around in my studio today with drum recording and discoverd a way to get a basic but, good sounding drum track.

place the kick drum mic(beta 52) about 5-8' from the back head.(laying on a peice of foam sheet.) make sure that your muffling is good or this may sound bad on your kit. i used a aquairian super kick drum head on the back and a remo w/t muffling ring on the front. (you can pick this up at your music store for about $40.00)

the snare mic(sm57) should be about 1-2' from the head facing down at the rim.( i used a pickilo snare on this so if you have a basic snare tune the heads(top and bottom) as high as they will go. and lower the snares just a little.)

i placed the overhead mic as high as i cound get it. i placed it
right in the middle of the front of the kit.

the room mic (a cheap radio shack mic) was placed about 6" in front of the kit.(i only used the cheap raio shack mic because it was the only mic that i had left after using them on the snare, kick and overhead. i was happy with the sound it gave.)

next: eq the mics how you want them.

compress thehell out of the snare and go easy on the overhead.

and then add a nice room revurb.

i hope that this helps some of you and for those
that it don't.....well thanks for reading anyway!

and if the sound of the room is shit, skip the room mic and go with a single overhead or stereo overhead mic'ed a little closer.......

Good job ZEKE. I think we all learned from that. Thanks.

or try overheads the way Mike Hedges described as the "Glyn Johns way"....2 overheads, both 2 1/2 sticks length from the snare, the 1st over the floor tom looking toward the snare and the 2nd directly over the center of the snare, then adjust for phase.....the kick drum would go in front of the kick drum.....3 mics....viola.....

One thing you need to do is good some very well isolated phones (Sennheiser HD 280 pros for instance, but a control room would be better) and while someone plays, move that overhead mic around a few inches and find the best sounding spot that is also in phase with the snare, and kick if possible. Then, with the room mic, do the same thing, only it will be a little harder to find a good spot where its also in phase too, with the close mics AND the overheads... This is a hugely important aspect everyone always seems to leave out these days.
Oh, and try to position that room mic low out front where it gets some good kick and toms and as little cymbals as possible.
Peace.

oops! mabad!

6 FEET from the kit. not 6".

You have to have at least 250 posts to specify a custom avatar. You can choose from a list of pre-selected avatars if you hit the 'user cp' button near the top of the screen and go to 'edit options'.

Hey ZEKE,

Like Whoopy Said, once you get 250 + posts, you can put whatever you would like there as long as the file size is small enough. I got that off of some web site somewhere. You let me know when you get to 250 little brother and we will get you a good one ok?
