Hi,

I suffer from LOO. Love of omnis. Right now I have four pairs.

EV 635a
Shure SM61
Realistic 1070b
msh-1O

So you see the picture. Three pairs of vintage dynamics. One pair condensor.

So here's my questions. What are your favorite dynamic omnis? Do you use any dynamic omnis with extended frequency range and high detail?

Mshilarious spoiled me. I am looking for something closer in sound to the msh-1O but with the reliability and ease of use of a dynamic for field recording often out of doors.

Thanks,

Hairy Larry

My impression is that there is general consensus among experts that the EV RE-55 is the most accurate dynamic omni mike ever. It's been discontinued since about 1999 or maybe 2000. Anyway, I have four. They are very handy for many uses. They have flat frequency response, but use a resonant chamber to extend the high end up to around 20K and that does affect the transient response some, plus of course, they're dynamics which also tends to affect the transient response.

I also have a pair of Shure SM-80 capsules, which are generally regarded as (perhaps the only) decent cheap omnis, and I'm saving up to buy a pair of modded SM-81s, so I can have the bodies to use with the SM-80 omni capsules. That should happen very soon.

Cheers,

Otto

What's the mod to the SM81 that makes it work with the SM80 capsule, and is can it still work as it used to afterward?

[ I just got in a second SM81 today (they're not for sale :) ) -- I love that mic - the two were made years apart from each other, but seem nearly identical in sound. ]

Sorry, I confused you. The SM80 and SM81 bodies are the same, at least as far as size, shape and function, and are interchangeable, though labels would differ. There are just the two capsule types: R104 (cardioid as in SM81) and R104A (omni as in SM80) and the latter omni capsule was discontinued in about 2000.

It is merely coincidence that I'm buying a pair of modded SM81s. The mod has nothing to do compatibility with the SM80 capsules. Like the RE-55, the SM81 creates a resonant chamber in front of the capsule to keep the frequency response curve looking flat all the way to 20K, but with the inevitable cost to transient and phase response. By removing the slotted disc in front of the capsule, you do lower the response to -3 dB at 18K, but you get a better transient response.

Cheers,

Otto

ofajen,

I found this link.

http://www.coutant.org/re55/index.html

It looks like my 635a except real long! Nice specs though. Very interesting.

Thanks,

Hairy Larry

The 635a has a low frequency roll off since it was designed for ENG (Electronic News Gathering), i.e. interviews, and the low end response is just a nuisance for that use. It also lacks the resonant chamber in front of the capsule so it rolls off at a lower frequency.

Cheers,

Otto
