Long distance

Hey all,

Im in the wonderful process of building up my studio, but i came to one halt. I decided im gonna have the control room inside my house, and the drumms/amps ect outside in my musicroom, (built onto the side of my house), Laying the cables long distance aint a problem, but then i tought getting 40ft mic cables will be a bit of a task!. So then i was thinking 10ft cables from the mics.


10ft cable ----> Connector ---> 30ft ---> Mixer


But what is the name of the connector i should be using, is this a patch bay?
and will this effect the sound?

Make your own cables. Cheaper, better, the less connections you make = a better signal
 
a snake?...., can anyone tell me what exactly dose a patch bay do, I know it makes a connection, but dose it alter the sound in anyway?
 
A good patchbay shouldn't alter the sound at all, it should sound like straight wire.

As far as your cable question, if you are laying mic cables, then you would be using XLR connectors.

Yes, a snake is a box of input connectors (in your case XLR female is needed) wired out and shrink wrapped for long distances. I personally use a 50' snake in my studio and it's more than I need but they make them hundreds of feet long if needed.

At the other end is your XLR male connectors to hook to your mixer.

Pretty simple deal, yes it seems as though you need a snake for microphone use. Might be handy to get some 1/4" sends as well.
