London Calling - continuing with my Clash obsession

Good remix. Levels sound about right. You've got Strummer nailed.

Bubba, this is a great take - really authentic mate. If anything, it's a bit crisper sounding than the original.

Drums, guitars, vocals all sound great. Guitar feedback and verb on the backing vocals is all spot on. Well done man!

Thanks Lou, Jonny, dobro, Rob, robus. I realised myself that mine's a bit crisper on an A/B test, but not sure if that's a good thing. The original's also louder! How do they get it so loud?

The original original is not that loud. The remasters are pretty loud. Pro mastering engineers in pro mastering studios can do things we home rec goofballs can't.

Very nice! Not a huge fan of Clash, but I remember the song from moons ago. Sounds very faithful to my ears.

This reminds me of the Kaiser Chiefs first album A LOT :D

Yeah man this sounds great!

One thing though, until the vocals first come in the drums do sound a little too loud... They just are too up front and don't sound mixed in. However, remember, once the vocals come in they sound great! Maybe automate the volume?

A good idea.

Comparing your mix and the first mp3 I found on the net, yeah yours has way crisper guitars. But your vocal's not crisper, it's just clearer. I mean, do I have to buy the CD to give you reliable feedback? I don't mind; it's a great tune. But the Clash mix has slightly more attitude. I can't figure out if it's the mix or the recording. It sounds like there's more compression going on.

I think there IS a bit extra compression going on. There's a pumping quality to the original mix which might be compression or it might be the gated ambience that myself and bouldersoundguy were discussing earlier. Also, Joe's vocals are much, much better than mine.

What's next, Master Po? Got any Police in ya? Joe Jackson?

I'd love to do some Police, but the vocals are beyond me. If some castrati singer wanted to do a collaboration, I'd definitely have a go! Stewart Copeland is one of Frank's favourite drummers.

eh that was very very good...almost like an alternative take, it just sounded so authentic

great skill, and nice mix...I heard nothing in the second version Id change.

Listened to the tweaked version, sounds very good! I was curious to know how you recorded the bass, it sounds fantastic!

I got my hands on the original and compared it to yours. Yours is great, but it's different, and fwiw the biggest different seems to be the overall space it's recorded in. The Clash version seems recorded in a bigger space. Probably was. Convolution reverb might nudge it there a bit?

Hi, dobro - I think you're right and it's something I'm intending to look into over the Christmas break.

I've added a version with Convolution reverb, just for dobro. I think it sounds better. :)

Yeah, I think it's better, too. This song deserves the space. Good work.

Also, nobody ever listens to my suggestions. You've now officially taken on 'not normal' status here. Well done.

Cheers, Dobbers. :D I don't see why anybody wouldn't listen to your suggestions, you have one of the better sets of ears on here. :) Your songs do tend towards the eccentric, though. :D

Not eccentric - free. :D

If my ears are reliable, it's more because of the room and what I'm listening through than any talent - when I'm serious about hearing stuff, I listen through the monitors, and through the Avantone, and recently I got some Sennheiser HD 598s so I could really get into what the low end's doing. I got tired of dragging my sorry ass out to the car all the time to be able to know what's really going on in a mix.

Wow the vocals and drums are uncannily like the original. I don't think even the Clash ever played it that close. Great job
