Haha you 'Greg L'd the shit out of this! Sounds great though. Can you mess around with the phaser/flanger part? I think it needs to sound wetter maybe?

What do you mean? More phaser effect?

Raven, no to dwell on this, because this is a great version.

But, I think you're under the impression this song is usually in "E" and Greg just brought it down to a "D". The song is actually in "A", so he brought it UP to "D" and then sang the vocals in what turns out to be an octave lower.

Just wanted to explain what I was talking about.:)

i'm your fan, greg. you know.

fckn' cool, i loved the energy. nice voice. the mix is perfect. you've got the talent, kid.

That is correct......I think. :p

Thanks.

Guitars are an SG through a Digitech RP300a into a crappy practice amp mic'd with a 57. I used a "Boutique" setting with low gain double-tracked on each side. Added a phaser during the little breakdown parts.

The song is rockin' from your version. Don't know the original. Know very few orig. Zepps. The drums, the playing, the singing, the sound.... rockin'.

Greg, how do mic the amp with the 57. That's what I used for my piece in my latest thread. What do you track to. Computer directly or some multitrack? What's the sample rate plus bit depth? Curious. Great tone. So those SG's really rock, eh?

Thanks bigbubba.

I typically stick the mic dead center of the cone about 3" off the grill. That gives me a crisper sound. From the mic the signal goes into my Firepod and then into Reaper. My bit-depth/sample is 16/44100. I think that's what standard CD's are, so I just leave it at that.

Thanks for the info Greg. I had it like a foot away. Had no clue. So might redo it. :) I'll leave it to 44.1kHz and 16bitdepth. :)

A foot away isn't bad if that's what sounds good or if you want some room sound. I like mine up close because that's just what sounds best with my shitpile amp. Mic position, like with everything else, plays an important role on an amp. A little movement or tilt can make a big difference. I put tape on certain spots of my grill where I know I've gotten good results before. I've even snapped some pics with a digital camera to "document" the mic position when I get something I like.

Damn nice cover. I hear alot of Bonham in your cymbal work.....you seem to have the knack of washing cymbals into the background while still being nice and present. Very cool.

I find the comments regarding loose vs tight to be very interesting. I always felt like Zep let the tune come to them. They had the ability to just lay a tick or two behind the beat yet the grooves were always there. Count Basie was awesome at this too.

Overall, the mix is just damn tight....punchy and maybe just a bit brittle when all of the vox are there...but that's being pretty picky. Can't really find alot to pick on. Sweetness.

More or less, I can't decide which. Probably mroe actually, to get a real 'washy' sound. I think it's quite prominent in the original, no?

Okay thanks for the clarification. I think in the original version Page uses a mild wah effect on that part, and it's somewhat subtle. I never even noticed it all these years until I started listening really closely to try to pick out all the little nuances of the song.

Yeah, on the original it's a wah. There might be other effects, too, but it's a slow opening wwwwwaaaahhhhh on every chord.
