Hey guys, i'm new here and i've never done any kind of recording. I'm a live sound tech, and do alot of musicals, plays, or anything else that may require an audio tech with a console. The company i'm with is just getting into the video world, where we record a production and sell the DVD. However, consistantly our weakest link is the audio quality bc it varies widely depending on who's running the live sound for that particular show.

What i'd like to do is get a solid state multi-track recorder (ie Zoom R24?) and take 8 direct out's from the live FOH console then be able to take that home and make a mix just for the DVD. That being said, does anyone know what kind of setup I would need to take 8 recorded tracks, and mix them to burn to a DVD?

Here's what I was thinking and you can tell me if this would work.....
Zoom R24, to record 8 tracks on-site
Plug the R24 into computer at home via USB, and use Cubase to work with the tracks.

The R24 is also a DAW controller, but i've never used a DAW program so i'm not sure how that would work. With that DAW controller, would I basically be able to press play on the tracks and mix the same way I would mix live?

Also, if I bought studio reference speakers, would I plug them into my computer, or would I plug them into the monitor output on the R24 and send the DAW output to the R24?

Sorry for all the questions, but i'm new to any kind of recording or post-production mixing. All i've done is live audio and recording is a whole different beast. Thanks for any help you can give, and let me know if you need more info or anything.

A controller will let you mix with faders more or less, but it's not the same as an analog mixer. There's no escaping knowing how to operate the DAW.

I can learn to work the DAW, I was just wondering if the controller would allow me to more or less mix with faders, so thanks for that info.

You may need more than 8 channels when you record these shows.

Take a good look at THIS set up. I believe that you'll have a much easier time.
And if your looking for a great DAW check out Reaper HERE for free trial until your satisfied that this DAW is for you.
