live recording?! Please help!

I have some questions on live recording.

I once saw a radio-engineer recording a choir of +/- 20 people and a small orchestra (+/- 10 people) using the following equipment:

- an analog mixer
- two large diaphragm condenser microphones (put on one stand at a distance of about 20 centimeters, at a height of approx. 2.5 - 3 meters from the ground)
- a tascam cd-rw 2000 to record on

What do you think of this setup?
Is it a way to achieve a good live recording?
Does anyone know the Tasc. CD-RW 2000?
What setup (mic, recorder, ...) would you choose for a live recording of a small orchestra + small choir?

20 centimeters?? From what? Don't understand.

I am not familiar with a the tascam but a trick used before ADAT's was to use a stereo VCR to record onto...

...VCR's record digitally so...

...mic >> mixer >> VCR would work. Not very clear on your mic set-up however.

No problem at all...

A 20 centimeter mic spacing will give you basically a mono recording. If that is what you want that will work. If you want some stereo definition you will need the mics much further apart.

the 20 cm was probably an XY configuration depending on the mic polar pattern. That's a pretty standard configuration for that type of recording. Poke around on the net for stereo mic recording techniques. With a 2 good mics set up correctly, you can easily get some fantastic results.
