I'm using Soundforge 4.5, and my mixes are suffering from too many drastic peaks and valleys...I've done a bit with compression and normalizing but I'm rather new to the software and haven't been able to figure out how to limit...do I a) need a new plugin, or b) is there a way to do it that is already built into the software that I just haven't figured out yet?

WaveHammer does both compression and limiting (I think they call it volume maximization?). You have to got to the second tab on the WaveHammer box - it opens to compression by default.

This is based on 6.0 - dunno how different 4.5 was...

I'm not sure if 4.5 has wavehammer but if it does it can help. I tend to use the 'master for 16 bit' preset and vary output gain to taste relative to the other songs on a project.

You can also normalize using the rms method (root mean square) and come out with good results.

Just make sure you don't do both.

SF 4.5 Versus Acid 4.0

I can't remember back that far to say whether or not the stock plugins included a compressor/limiter suffice to say that in Acid 4.0 the plugs that ship with it include a very nice comp/lim that is suitable for mastering, and or ironing out peaks on individual tracks. Also if you go to Cakewalks' DirectX Files page there is a listing of freeware plugs that includes comp/lims. If you have the money I suggest investing in the Waves bundle, their C series comps are the best virtual devices in the business. And once again I am banging on about ditching SoundForge and doing any and all editing, tracking, mixing and mastering within Acid. It's just logical, anyway why bounce from app to app? Like why build a website with four different apps when PShop7 can produce phenomenal sites on it's own?

And just so you all know I have over 10 years experience in digital production and I was Digital Recording department head for the two largest music retailers in America, I have run two pro studios and own my own media company now, you can all trust me!

D'Asta,

two largest music retailers in America

walmart & sam goodies?

From you posts, one can easily conclude;

1. You certainly know not of what you speak
2. You've spewed shit OTHERS will now have to clean up
3. You're totally fuckin deaf

Look at the title of this forum...HOME recording!

You're just too pro for this place.....

Head back to your two pro studios with your other high school buddies and paint your miserable little songs in acid.

Well, firstly...
The retailers you mentioned are not music retailers, in the sense of the phrase as I used it, how about the clarity of "Musical Instrument Retailers"? Does that make you more comfortable?
And as for "painting songs in Acid"- That's how someone who believes that Acid is only a loop-based tool would create . High school? Son, I haven't seen high school in 15 years and in those years I have learned a lot and I came here to help out people with questions about Acid (predominately) and to learn a little bit myself. I learned one thing so far, some people get angry with their opinions and some get creative, try the latter, it's more productive and then those you direct spite toward don't have to waste time clearing the air...Now, does anyone want to get back to talking about home recording?

Do what you like in your production environment, but using multiple apps makes A LOT of sense.........

I use both Cubase SX 2 along with Sound Forge 6 for editing... why? because for some things SX2 is better at and others Sound Forge is. Period. You use whatever tools are needed that give you the best results.

Why tie yourself down to using only one app simply as a matter of personal policy??? That makes no sense at all.

And even with all that experience, it seems you didn't learn much about the nuts and bolts of day-to-day editing in a production environment.

It's nice to be opinionated, but you should have some solid hands-on experience to back the opinions up. Sounds to me like while you may have been in charge of digital production teams, you didn't actually do any hands-on production work yourself, otherwise you wouldn't be making the comments I've seen from you.

Point well taken Blue Bear Sound,

Indeed I couldn't agree more reflecting Sound Forge employ outside with other working environments.

Although, this be all to best of every user’s point of view and aspirations, this tends to be most productive way of making things done. After all, I remember always what guys both at Steinberg and Emagic told me at Frankfurt show in 90’s while speaking in very relaxed atmosphere: "We rob few things from them they rob few things from us"

This made me to never think again about making elitist
statements or opinions that every program has to be all-the-best for every task. It simply couldn’t, because everything evolves and learning from others in form of mimics is simply natural way of development and some tend to be better in each corner.

Last year my friend was amazed when I started using Sound Forge instead long time companion Alchemy on Mac, he just wouldn’t recognize that this program has in many ways outgrow Alchemy.

Hell, even friend from Australia with Farlight Merlin (2 generations ahead of everything) is using off the system resources.

If many more different elements are shaping creative synergy and uplift flexibility why stick with one domain only?

I'll comment on this post later..... (once I get to a Kinko's).

I'm on the road.
