Lil Help here?

I have a Radio Shack 3 Band 7 Channel Mixer and a Computer and I even have a touch screen flat panel monitor for it. I also have Magix Music Studio 5 and not a clue what to do with any of it.
Right now I have it as this I have the Mic into the mixer and the From the headphone output into the Line in on my computer and then I have my headphons in the output. Seems to work ok
But what else do I need or should I do?? Or any Advice?

Big question!

What else do you need? That depends on what you're trying to do. You say your setup "works fine," so I'd guess that you're golden for now. If you are getting sound onto your hard drive and playing it back, then you're on your way!

After recording a few things you'll start to figure out what your problems/limitations are-- "I need a cleaner sound," "I don't have enough inputs," etc. That's when people will throw mic suggestions, preamp suggestions, etc. at you.

You also said you "don't have a clue" but that the setup "works fine." What is it that you are clueless about? I'm clueless.... :D
 
Question

Why are you using the headphone out on the mixer to feed the soundcard? Your mixer probably has a line out or a Main out of some sort which should be connected to the Line-in on your soundcard. Then you can use the headphone jack on the mixer to monitor.

esactun- You are basically right I dont know what Im asking either. I think im still new and confused and dont know the right questions to ask to get the right answers??? Or maybe I think there is more thats supposed to be there than what I have, like what I have is not enough to do it right? ya know???


Dick - the mixer does have audio outs, you right but they are in RCA format and as we know inputs on a regular soundcard are not...... so thats the only choice i have as of right now
 
Your other post said you had a Live Drive

If you have the LiveDrive connected to your recording computer, you have the RCA's on the front. Or you can always go to Radio shack and get a 1/4" to RCA adapter when you get the chance.

By RCA, you mean the plug type? You can get adapters to make them work. I'd avoid using the headphone out for a source if possible. There are impedance matching issues and it's best, if possible, to run line signals to line inputs. It's not just a matter of turning the headphone out down 'till it's the right volume. Headphone lines are designed to push 8-32 ohm cans while line outs are designed to run into much higher impedance line inputs. Athough it works the way you have it; the mismatch in impedance affects frequency response, distortion levels and amount of headroom. Since your card has line ins, I would go get an adapter to connect RCA to whatever your cards' line in is.
 
I would recomend to just start recording some stuff if you can. Then come back and ask more specific questions like "How do I get rid of this buzz" and "why does my omni mic sound so far away."
