A song about the homeless. Would love feedback on the mix.

Thanks,

Thanks to feedback, here is the 2nd version, sounds better to me.

I think when there's just an acoustic guitar as backing you want to maximise the vocal melody. For me the spoken parts don't work nearly as well as the sung parts. Good tune

Thanks for the feedback. I actually am not the writer or performer. I just mixed this. I'm not a huge fan of the spoken parts, but it's the artists way of telling his story, so I just go with it.

I agree with BH - So so on the spoken, excellent singer. The spoken part seems to be a little louder and more up front than the singing part - closer to the mike? The singing parts are my favorite - very well mixed and balanced. The guitar is great. Can you disclose the instrument/mic/pre you used? Nice song - light and easy to listen to....

Thanks for the feedback. The guitar is a Taylor 412C (I think). It was recorded with a joly modded Oktava MK-012 at the 12th fret into a buzz elixir, and a Pearlman TM-1 at the bridge through an Avedis ma5. Vocals are a mix of the same preamps and mics, but a shure sm7 replacing the oktava.

Acoustic rap - there is a history of it.
The spoken word is too up front and that makes it seem a little too didactic.
The singing works a treat - the guitar is well captured.
Perhaps pulling the spoken back a little & emphasising the melodic parts of the guiatr a little more or drop in a piano playing the melody.
It's a good song that is, realistically, hampered by a desire to communicate clearly & urgently. THe sung sections communicate more deeply & satisfyingly than the spoken so The fellow ought to rethink his approach.
Good work on your part.

Thanks Ray,

Once again, I think you hit the nail on the head. New edit added at top.

The song is very good.
The sung parts are beautiful and the acoustic is well captured.
With the rap parts, I guess that's all down to taste, you either like them or you don't. I detected a couple of pops where he pronounces the "p" in the spoken parts, but I don't know if that's my sub enhancing them. Nice song!

Thanks, actually the popping p was louder. I automated some EQ points to cut out the pop frequency, but it didn't get it all. I'll keep working on it.

Here's the newest mix, with less p popping and vocal levels equalized better.
