i've got a digi 001 and i am looking for a way to utilize the lightpipe inputs. i'm looking for something like an 8 channel patchbay or something with 8 - 1/4inch inputs and the lightpipe outs so i can double the number of simultaneous inputs.

Thats not what a patch bay is for. Your looking somthing with 8 mike pre's like Focusrites octopre, presonus digimax, yamaha has a board with lite pipe option im not sure on the model #, or you could get alesis AI-3 or adat(these are just for converters, you still will need preamps with these) dont forget you can get 2 more inputs using the s/pdif's on digi 001. (18 total)

yeah, i don't really know what i'm talking about...

i have a good collection of pre-amps (Presonus/RNP/DMP3/UA 610/DBX 386) and mixing boards that could be used as pre's. i'm basically looking for something that i can plug into the lightpipe plug then plug my pre's into that thing so i can have eight more inputs - patch bay just came to mind. i actually don't want it to be a pre-amp - that will keep the cost down a bit. i'll look at that Alesis unit and see what it does.

my budget is never really an issue. if i can't afford it i save up and buy later. i just want to know which ones will work well with the digi001 and the lightpipe (my spdif is already in use). keep in mind the digi001 is 48khz max. actually i'd sorta prefer a little older one so i can try to find it used somewhere. obviously cheaper is better, keep in mind this is a home studio project and i still have to pay rent etc. sometime! thanks

The cheapest way to go may be to look for a used ADAT XT or XT20. The converters aren't the best, but they aren't the worst, either (& remember, they'll be either 16 or 20 bit, not 24).

i'm not completely opposed to the ADAT route i think it could be a good cheap way to do this, but do you think having to use tape would be an issue, or can i just send the tracks directly to the digi001 recorder? - i've never used ADAT if you can't already tell :)

by the way, what do ADAT XT and XT 20's cost, and what's the difference between the two?

You don't need to use tape (though you may have to put a tape in the machine) just set it to monitor all inputs. I'm not sure what they cost, as you'd be buying them used (they've been discontinued for a while). Actually, there might be a few NOS XT20s still in somebody's warehouse, being blown out (under a grand, for sure). As far as the difference - the ADAT XT was the second generation of ADAT, it used 18bit converters, though it only recorded at 16bits (not sure about the pass-thru, so consider it 16bit). The XT20 was the 3rd generation machine, with 20bit conversion & recording. I'm sure somebody here can point you to some used gear sites to get an idea of prices, but I can't imagine them being much over $500 or $600, even for an XT20.
