Light,

From your experience, what is the best way to remove dull, smeary depositis and get a good shine back on the surface of a guitar..........I'm having problems with a Gibson ES340 and Les Pauls.

A soft lint free cloth (or we actually use Viva paper towel, but no other brand is usable) with a good quality guitar polish, and a little elbow grease. Our favorite polish right now is a product called Powerchord, which is made by a company called Bioterra (I am not sure about that spelling). They do not, however, have a website, nor can I find any web presence at all. Good stuff though, and I will try to post their number next time I am at the shop. The GHS polish is pretty good, as well. Don't use furniture polish, as they usually contain silicon, which can damage your finish.

If it goes beyond what you can get with a basic polish, we can usually buff things like that out, but you need to get that done professionally, as you probably don't have the equipment, and it is possible to burn through the finish as well.

Thanks for the advice.

I knew about the silicone in some furniture polish but I need something that will clean the surface without leaving streaks and smears........putting a wax polish or other like product on before I clean the surface will be a waste of time.

Good guitar polish is mostly for cleaning. More than 90% of the time, all we use is some polish on a cloth, and some elbow grease. Rub harder, I guess is what I am trying to say. Try the GHS stuff, it is pretty good.
