Level settings when recording vox

Wonder if anyone here could help with a fairly basic question on line levels and settings while recording vocals to a DAW (Logic)... thankz ahead.

I'm running from a Chameleon Labs 7622 into an Apogee Ensemble interface. I've been advised by Apogee to use the Hi-Z (1/4" jack socket) front input to take signal from my 7622 into my interface.

Is this correct? Would it be better to use one of the channels 5-8 inputs at the back?

Then I've been advised, again by Apogee, to set the input on my Ensemble to +4db.

Problem is, I'm doing a lot of spoken word and the noise levels on the mic seem quite high.

(Mic is an SE5000)

As long as the 5-8's are line level, that's fine. As long as you're using BALANCED (TRS) 1/4", that's fine.

Hit levels around -10dBFS (at the absolute max, IMO) in the DAW and go from there.

Massive M, I think one of my 1/4" jacks is not TRS. But that's the one I record guitar through, not vocals.

Sorry to be so in the dark bu how exactly do you tell if a jack is TRS, does it look like a stereo jack with an extra black collar and three, not two, connections inside? If that's the case then my mic is on a TRS.

Re levels, it's good to have that advice, my problems seem to happen at the point where I overdrive the Ensemble because its flashy blue meters are so basic. Lovely sound but loony metering. I must get into the habit of opening the Maestro software meters and checking the input levels there. And I'll definitely look to that -10 principle.

TRS - Tip Ring Sleeve like you described is the balanced 1/4" jack that the Ensemble uses for both the front and back inputs.
Might the back TRS's accept hotter signals (i.e. be less sensitive) than the front's might be a question?

You'll want FM XLR out of the 7602 x male TRS to stay balanced would be preferred way (Chameleon' doesn't seem to address un-ballancing the output. (I'd advise connector-to cable-to connector rather than one of those solid XLR x TRS adapters -FM TRS jacks can be really flaky.
If need be use the 7602 output trim to keep your record levels down where they belong.

Hello... Slaambo!

Awwwww, mixsit you've chimed there with some good info, nice!

So, I'm gonna check with Apogee about the sensitivity issue re back and front ins (unless some wise bod on this board knows this unit's spec).

Case anyone's wondering why I have two inputs on a 7602, I don't, it's a 7622, my error.

Massive Master, mixsit, I'm indebted to u dudes and glad to have found this address at hr.com

Thankz for makin me feel welcome

For that matter you could just compare to see if there's difference in the record levels you get between the front and back with the Apogee at min gain (if there are controls for it?
