Geet, I listened to the link that was your band, and I think it's a good recording, and well executed musically.

geet73, you are truly stretching the definition of crap gear with your mc012 and krk and AT and what not, but I gave your band's tune a listen. Definitely very nicely recorded. And a nice song too. I really like the playing. The vocalist was not bad on that song at all.

I listened to a bit of the other two pieces and they have the same clear quality to them. Good job.

I still posted one with all Nady stuff. :)

Thanks.

Scrubs,
You did not list your gear so I am suspicious, but I like what I am hearing. THis is the type of music I love. SLightly melancholy, very melodic. Good music is good regardless of gear. Great job my friend.

Thanks for the listen and the positive comments.

Gear list:

Instruments:
Fender Acoustic/Electric (~$500 new, but technically, this is not "gear")
Yamaha Tele Copy ($100 used)
Mako Bass ($75 at a pawn shop) - has some serious noise issues which you can probably hear if you listen closely

Mics:
MXL 603s ($200 for the pair) - used a pair for the acoustic tracks and a single for background vocals
Nady SCM-900 ($90) - lead vocal (It's probably the crappiest of all my crappy mics, but it just worked better than the others for this tune)

Preamps:
VTB-1 ($130) - lead vocal, electric guitar and bass DI
DMP3 ($90 on ebay) - acoustics and background vocals

Other gear:
Behringer GI-100 ($35) - I think I ran both the bass and the electric through this
Zoom 505 ($100) - modified a couple of the clean presets on this for the tele parts, which were recorded direct

Interface:
Tascam US-122 ($200)

Software:
Cubase SE ($75) + all free plugins
Drumsite ($50 drum sample program)

Edit:
Monitoring system:
Logitech Computer Speakers ($110)
Audio Technica ATH-M30 Headphones ($45)

I think that's it. Absolutely nothing even remotely professional in my studio! Again, thanks for the comments. :)

hey scrubs,

congrats on achieving good sound without breaking the bank -the very essence of home recording.

GEET..i really enjoyed that band "bornuponatree"...great rhythm's and style!
You tracked that for them or?

Hey Cyan. My daughter recorded this one with a sb audigy and a $50 MXL 990. There was a preamp involved, but nothing special (dmp3).

I just recorded it. They're re-recording everything sometime soon. I'll post some of it here, I'm sure.

That's not fair because none of the rest of us have that kind of talent!

Damn, you beat me to it. I was going to say the exact same thing. :)

Hey Big Honest Mango,

Your Daughter has a real good voice. I am VERY impressed with the recording. Many people who fret about the latest, greatest gear need to get back to simplicity and save some money.

Bravo.

Check out these songs.

I used some crappy cheap mics and a tascam 244. Stereo set as monitors. That's all.

Hey Bobby,
You might be using cheap gear but the song comes thru. I listened to Sit, Feel me, Lay down. The good guitar playing is evident and your voice is real nice. The only issue worth commenting about is, of course, the volume. I dont know if your 244 has compression but a simple compression will fix that. Good job. Keep focusing on the music instead of sweating the recording.

oh it's not my voice, it's my friends. About the volume, I guess it's a lot softer after whe changed it to mp3. Sit feel me lay down, is the song i'm least satisfied with productionwise, but it's a good song.

Wow, now that I think of it, I've got some stuff that I recorded on a sub-$15 dollar sound card (not even a soundblaster) and a $25 radio shack mic - (wish I still had that - good talk-back mic). I just need to post it up - you can't beat a $40 recording set-up, now can you?

It's just acoustic guitar and vocals.

Oh, and for monitors - the $10 special that came with the computer, wich was an AMD K6-3 433. . . . ok - $50 set-up with monitors.

I've been through a couple upgrades since, and I currently have a Presonus Firepod (which I absolutely love), some MXL 603s's, a studio projects C1, and an sm57, plus a POD. I've got a few of the anciet recordings around, though, just to remember where I started. Sometimes I'm amazed at how good they sound.
