Holy crap. TravisinFlorida, I love that. Is that your mike overloading, I think your version is the most natural sounding, like it was the one the song needed.

thank you very much billyshuler............I thought it was just semi-structured noise. I admit, I did quite a few takes because I'm not real good at improv and because Rokket is the one that posted the back track.......good job man.

btw, that overloading sound is 2 modeled plexi's.

I liked it...

And I'm glad you liked the backing track. If it's one thing I do know how to do, it's come up with decent instrumental stuff. Now if I could sing and play lead, I'd be a dangerous mo fo...

This bad boy has 9 entries. How long should we keep this one active? I'd like someone to post a poll and let's get the vote going. After that, I'll get Dogman's song done and give it to him to post...

Since it's my backing track, I'd like to hear a couple more, personally... I'll start the poll in a couple days if no one else enters this...

Travis, I love the tone. That was the "Dirtiest" I've heard yet. And nice.

Rokket, why don't we give it a bit longer? I'd love to hear more also. I offered up a shiny nickel to Rabbit, just so we could have a real ringer in here. He said somthing about a Ramones style thing. How much longer you around for? Through the summer at least?

Yeah, I am flying back to the states in August, somewhere around the 18th, but I have to give up my house next month, and that means the pc and all goes away... after that, no more bbs for me...

Next Month?!?!? That is soon. You are a short timer. Are you coming here to a naval base, or civilian stuff?

To Poll or Not to Poll?

My own preference would be to talk about and read about the music in the Rumble but not have a poll. I think the thread will be more interesting if responses are verbal rather than voted. Also, just like with mic's, I don't think there is a best. Everybody's got their own style that comes across in the music. If we have to have a poll, in stead of voting for a best, maybe we should ask viewers to vote on statements that show their attitude about performing like, "I Rumbled and lived to tell the story.", or "OK, so I recorded a solo and was too wussy to post it.", or "I Rumbled like a MAN and used an acoustic gtr!" :D (sorry), or “All you guys suck so I don’t wanna Rumble.”, or "I spent thousands on gear and hundreds of hours learning to use it, but I don't want to stick my neck out and let anyone hear me."

Speaking of talking... I'm interested, and maybe others are too, in hearing more about everybody's recording chain, editing and processing, and their mental process when creating their solo. :)

I used a Squier Bullet extensively hotrodded, with Mighty-Mite alnicos, run into the Line 6 Spider II 15 using the Plexi sim. I went from the amp directly into a Yamaha MG10/2 and then into my laptop’s line in. Did the recording in Cubase. The double stop stuff at the end came out a lot louder (I was probably playing harder) than the rest so I applied a compressor as an insert on that channel. I also edited the waveform to force a faster fadeout of the solo. Them Bullets, man, they’ll sustain forever!

I doodled around while watching the Cubs until I found the double stop, the walk coming off the low E and upping that a fourth, and the walk to use over that funky E-F-G progression, then I started to put them together. I was gonna put the double stop first, but it was too hard to come in on time. (Maybe the next one will have a count in of some sort!) Then I discovered that the double stop could nicely go to an A5 on the 7th fret D string, which would be good place to end. Ran through it a couple of times until I could play it, recorded a couple of takes until I got one right.

My daughter said it sounded like my other solos. Have I got a distinctive style, or am I in a rut already?

Hey apl, that's exactly the stuff I'm interested in.

Right now I'm thinking how to describe the ways I cheated to make myself sound better than I really do. Don't know if I want to be too revealing though.

My Rumble Gear

I used two different nylon str guitars - my Clarke for two rhythm gtr tracks I layed down first while I was trying to forget the weekend from hell and get in the mood. Tracked the solo lines on a guitar I built - it's the gtr in my avatar. M160 mic @ 2 ft from bridge, GR pre, Lucid converter, all parts tracked mono. Small room. Prefer to use my big room with the mic further away, but not practical when multitracking, so I just sat in front of the box to record. The M160's a hypercard so doesn't pick up much of the room when that close. I just played along until I could feel it, then started recording.

yea, this is more fun than a poll.

I popped in for a listen expecting another cheesy yamaha track (that stuff was impossible!). After listening to all the other solos, I knew the only thing left to do was to make some noise. It was pretty late so I had to go direct out of my Duoverb amp, to the Yamaha 12/4, to the 1010LT and recorded through Sonar. Since I was shooting for noise, I left the single coil hum from my knock off strat at the end of the track for vibe. At one point, I had 5 solo tracks to pick from. I chose the noisiest, least polished one.

Cheating with Editing and Processing

OK, here's how I cheated to try to make my solo sound better than I do in real life.

I tracked solo lines, take after take, stopping after each to delete passages I didn't like. After 6 takes I had the minute pretty well filled up. Didn't sit as well as I wanted in the backing tracks though, so I did two rhythm gtr parts - a bossa type rhythm (more like maracas played on the strings) that's really low in the mix and has a high pass filter on it at about 100 Hz, then a rasgueado flamenco rhythm that varied through the piece, building up as it went but staying kind of easygoing.

To help the solo gtr part compete with the backing's fullness I hit the lead line with the Dave Brown multiband limiter - mainly using it as an EQ since it sounds pretty good at that, with just a dB or two peak limiting on the low end, and the lows and low-mids boosted a couple of dB. Solo gtr part sent to reverb and a touch of delay, almost unnoticeable with each. Hit the whole mix with Waves lin multiband comp, cutting 2-4K Hz a little to make it a little sweeter since it's a somewhat harsh small room, and using a dB or two of gain reduction in the two lowest bands at peaks, with a corresponding make-up gain. Then L2 limiting boosting another couple of dB with peak limiting every 10 seconds or so maxing at 3 dB reduction. Dithered w/L2 also, then exported from Cubase at 16/44.1. Transferred file to my internet laptop with a memory stick, then converted to mp3 using the laptop's Dell Musicmatch Jukebox.

Well, poll or no poll, this is fun. I actually don't care about a contest, as I like this stuff, for my own pleasure. I think the only reason there was a poll last time, was to get more feedback. That is also fun. And nice. :D
I do like the discussion/arguing about this stuff though. Actually, no real arguing.

My chain is this....I "borrowed" my wifes guitar. It's a new Simon & Patrick that I bought her for Christmas. I was noodleing with my electric, and did a few passes, but it is tuned down to C#, so everything sounded pretty bad. She wanted me to tune hers, so I played to the diddy about 4 times, then actually did the solo in 1 take. I tried a couple of others, but more buzzy notes ensued, so then I tuned hers, and gave it to her. Note...After I did the solo, then I tuned it. OOOPPPSSS!!!

Anyway, I plug the guitar into a really cheap (free), really old (had it for 20 years) Ibanez CP-9 compressor. That goes into my Boss BR-532 4 track, and I used the Fat Acoustic amp modeler. From there, into my old Gateway Athlon 1200 pc, with Adobe Audition on it. I then mixed the solo with the diddy Rocket gave us. Nothing but matching the volume somewhat. I then posted to the dogz website, for all your listening pleasure. Now, if I had my own acoustic, I might play it more than once a month. I wouldn't be any better though.

That's it. Now, more solos please.

Hey guys, hope I'm not too late. Here's me wanking a little, all improv, all one take (and boy does it sound like it ;) ).

Tim, I'd show you pictures of my studio, but then I'd have to kill you. Or, you would just die laughing. Either way, not good.
