Tim, I'd show you pictures of my studio, but then I'd have to kill you. Or, you would just die laughing. Either way, not good.
Ed

Naww... all you do is pile up your gear and take a close-up shot of it, then crop the pic to remove things like refrigerators and TVs. Then the real trick is to visit websites like Great River, Lavry, Neumann... copy their logos... then cut and paste them into your pictures to cover up the existing logos.

I still want head shot photos of everybody so I can watch the Crossroads final scene with everybody else's pic taped up over Steve V's face. :D

Hey guys, hope I'm not too late. Here's me wanking a little, all improv, all one take (and boy does it sound like it ).

Sounds great. Really one take? Wow.

OK :

OK, due to overwhelming public outcry, there shall be no poll, and this is not a contest. I want to look at it as a pleasent side track (no pun intended). This is much more fun than a contest, and without any pressure, I am sure that a lot more people will join in!

So let's have fun and see how many more people will give this a shot.

FWIW, my arm is strong enough that I can start tracking that bass line I promised 7string, so once I get that nailed, I am going to try a solo on this too. It's kind of funny that this is my rhythm track, yet I haven't done anything with it...

mshilarious...That was a good one. Teach Tim to ask for something he might get.

Lol, one take as in no editing, redubbing or comping. It took a few tries to get a good one. Yours is amazing btw.

I've noticed that the various guitar tones that I record are a weak link in songs that I try to put to CD. It's quite a learning experience to find how things that sound great live can sound like absolute shit when it's on tape. On my solo, I even backed off on the gain to hella levels, and it still came out very abrasive. All part of the learning process, I suppose, and I'm honestly quite grateful to all you guys for the chance to do something like this.

So anyway...the guitar is an Ibanez S series 7 string named "Betty". My amp is the old Line 6 Flextone set to the clean jazz tone with about an 8-6-8 on the eq. (that was an accident--I just now looked at that for this thread and holy crap...something needs to be done there!) Cab is a Behringer 412, because it's cheap and big...great for live use, but extremely bright for recording. The effect comes from a Boss GT-6 using a Rectifier model with the gain (supposedly!) knocked down to tolerable levels. Yeah, right! I mic'd the cab with a Sennheiser e609 (God, I love that thing...) into a Yamaha MG16/6fx ran completely flat. From there, the chain goes from a Delta 44 to N-Track. My setup is cheap as far as the start of a DAW goes, but I've had some good luck in getting things to sound better than I thought I'd be able to.

Guys, this really is a blast. Let's keep this tradition going. Speaking for myself, I can learn so much from all of you, and it really is an honor to be included amongst the talent I'm hearing here.

Purge, if I have my way, everyone will play a solo here. :D

I'd live to hear more. Tell anyone with a guitar, bass, cowbell etc... to do something. I love to hear the different styles played, and see how many different ideas can come from a short little ditty.

Nice solos here dudes! :) I didn't even know so many of you can play guitar :D

Well, I couldn't resist to put one quickie of my own here. Nothing fancy.. Just 5min or so soloing. Got 3 whole takes to choose from, this was the best imo. I think this was 3rd and the last take :). So nothing edited here, just me and my guitar :p

Didn't really have any interest to "mix" it, just some reverb/delay and thats it!

My solo is here

Very good feel you have! I like it. I am downloading this one too! I like the double-stop thing you have going on.... very jazzy feel.

Of course if I do one, I have the advantage of the original tracks. I can cheat a bit...

As far as recording that one, well, I cheated a bit, but not on purpose. Like I said, the tracks were recorded a year ago, so I had no idea what I was doing. The acoustic guitar tracks were DI'd into my MR-8 with a cheap sound hold pickup that I bought. The bass and drums were also DI'd. I played with the eq as much as I could to bring out the tracks a little better, but you all know a DI'd guitar always sounds like poop...

Nice work everyone. Part 3 in a few days...

Thanks man. I just closed my eyes and let it flow :)

Might help a bit that I'v been playing guitar around 10+ years and nowadays I give a lot of guitarclasses and play alot in a different bands. Whoever happens to need a guitarist. So I think I'm half pro, well at least half of my money comes from quitar playing/teaching :D

The jazzy feel might come from the fact that most of the spare time playing I do is mainly jazz ;)

Kainz, that was beautiful. Rich tone, articulate rhythms, and perfect intonation in the left hand work. Liked the use of altered repetition in phrasing, and the turn of melody at the end where it ends on the 2nd degree of the scale.

Tim

Kainz, very cool. I agree with what Tim said. Rich tones, and articulate. Kept me from saying nice again. Damn. I just said nice. Sorry.

I liked it very much. It sounded very pretty. Fit well.

I've been saving everybody's solos and sorting them with a playlist on my laptop's jukebox app. Interesting to cycle through them hearing them back to back.

Somebody mentioned on-line audio file handling earlier, and somebody else mentioned frustration with streaming audio. Everybody's probably got their own methods, but here's a couple things I do to make on-line audio use simpler. Please ignore if this is stuff you already know. I've got WinXP... with mp3's when I listen initially, the file is automatically saved to the folder My Documents/My Music/From Internet. Then, to keep Rumble files together I just drag and drop each to a Rumble folder I keep on my desktop. For streaming audio, I just open Audacity (freeware and simple), click record, start the audio streaming on the web page, click Audacity's stop button at the end. Then I use Audacity's export to wave file function and store it in my Rumble folder, and add it to my jukebox's Rumble playlist. Using Audacity for this is simpler than using my other rec software as I don't have to change soundcard settings. Oh, and I rename the files with the person’s name so I can keep track of which is which.

So, mshilarious, I don't get it... are you the pinata pig or the little girl?

Tim

Well, you're the one who asked for the head shot :p

The little girl is one of my daughters a couple of years ago. This was at my bandmate's daughter's party. As the group of three year olds was completely incapable of breaking the pinata with a plastic baseball bat, after a while my bandmate took a whack. I figured he needed a handicap, so I picked up a pushbroom to hit him in the butt. As he swung at the pinata, I swung at him, but tragically I missed and 'accidentally' nailed him in the grapes

There's no better present for a three year old than seeing your father rolling around the garage curled up in a fetal position :D

Tonight I'll post my solo . . . on didgeridoo!
