Welcome to the club brother. The fun really begins when you start swapping tubes.

Oh yeah? What are you using? (And which way do they take the amp?)

I swap tubes so often that I keep the front off the amp. One word of caution don't use 12AU7/ECC82,12AT7 or you will burn the resistors and possibly the traces on the circuit board.
At the moment my tube compliment consists of:
V1= EI Elite Gold Ecc83
V2= Tung Sol 12Ax7
V3= Tung Sol 12Ax7
V4= JJ Ecc83 [this tube is for reverb which I never use]
V5= Tung Sol 12AX7
V6-V9= Svetlana EL34
This gives me a good hard rock tone sort of like a hot-rodded Marshall plexi only fatter. My favorite in V1 is a ribbed plate Telefunken but I'm saving that one for special occasions. Another tube that works really well in V1 is a Shuguang 12AX7 which is quiet with a crap load of gain. YMMV

First bit of tracking with the Legacy. Both the recording and the playing are just meh--but hey, it's the first time I threw a mic (or two) in front of the thing. I'm not even close to dialing in my own tone yet, but for what I just did tonight, this was an easy amp to record.

Volume's on one, gain's on five. Yeah, you're right, I need to turn it up some and really do some recording. Maybe this weekend.

Here's the noodling

Sounds good to me :D

congrats on the new amp man!

Your amp sounds quite different than mine. Which speakers are you using? This is a test clip of my Legacy with volume on 1 and gain on 7.

That sounds great--recording and playing.

I'm using V30's. How are you micing yours? I think that's the big variable that I need to spend some time working on.

ocnor, can't got onto soundclick from work so no comment yet...

WS - cool clips. It sounds VERY different from what I'm used to hearing from a Legacy - a little less lower-mid-y and a bit crunchier, and more Marshall-y - and that's cool. :D

Sounds like one of the best investments you could make in your axe world...now, I KNOW, there has got to be more to that rock down noodling than what you posted, cause no true axeman alive that has that kinda self-control:D...and I, for one, would love to hear it.

I love that nasty tone you are getting out of it..and you have just begun playing with it! Your playing style is a perfect fit!..damn, that is some badass sounding stuff. I think you have taken your playing to another level with this baby...seems to have turned the monster loose..:cool:

By the way, thanks Strat...this is just what my soul was needing.

Thanks you are too kind. It sounds ok for being recorded at such low volume. I used an MXL 990 about 1-2 inches off center and about 3-4 inches from the grill cloth. The speaker is an Celestion G12H30 blackback. I've found that pulling the mic back a few inches sounds far better than close mic'ing. Also if you are able to crank the amp you will get much better results. I wish that I had a ribbon mic to experiment with but alas I'm poor and forced to make due with my el-cheapo setup.

My track was a 57 right on the grill and a condenser further back in the room. I'll try a condenser as the main mic. Also gonna play with a ribbon mic on it this weekend.

As they say, your mileage may vary....

But I grabbed one of these a year or so back when it was MF's "Stupid Deal of the Day."

It's not a "good" ribbon, as it's hardly what I'd call transparent, but the thing is just magical on my Rectifier. It smooths out the highs a little bit, rounds out the bass, and is way less position sensitive than a SM57. It's sort of like "perfect lead guitar tone in a box" for me, I'll have to EQ out a bit of low end tubbiness generally (though I need to spend more time experimenting with the impact of proximity effect), but other than that I haven't found anything I like more.

And, it's cheaper than a SM57, to boot. ;)

If you're in the same boat as I am, where you like your amp's sound but often find yourself wanting to smooth out the high end a little bit, just to tame it a hair and make it a little darker, this is definitely a possible answer.

congrats on the Legacy. I own a Legacy combo

thanks for the clip and it's nice to hear others but the tone seems distant and blanketed. I like what you have going on there, just an observation.
