Mr Gude, I bought my wife a refrigerator magnet that says, "All persons are born right handed. Only the greatest overcome it."
Peace

I told you lefties are freaks. Us righties don't go around making excuses why we are right handed. You lefty wierdos have fridge magnets for christs sake.

I have found that the guitar naturally "feels" correct to new players one way or the other. That, to me, is the determing factor. I have come across righties who play lefty, and lefties who play righty, and everything inbetween.

I am a lefty who plays righty guitar, because it felt right to do it that way.

I was also pushed to write with my right hand, which I cannot do to this day.

I have a friend and her son is 8 and a a lefty and just learning guitar. He's progressing really well, I think he could be pretty special.

Anyway mum wants to buy him an electric for his birthday but 3/4 size lefty electrics are difficult to come by. The guy in the shop said he should just learn to play right handed.

Is there any good reason he would have said this? (before I call the shop and give them the hairdryer treatment).

I guess he was really asking... How much of a lefty is the boy? My son, writes with his left hand bats a ball lefty. He plays guitar right handed (probably because that is what I own)... and shoots target (ie trap) left... He throws a ball right handed...etc

I guess many people learn this because we do live in a right handed world

Most Carvins are available as lefty at no extra charge. Their Bolt kit is the best $350 guitar in the world.

So what's wrong with playing a right handed instrument upside down? Just as long as it's set up right, I've seen scores of lefties playing guitars like this.
Interesting. Were they any good? What style?

I'd think that classical, or any conventional fingerpicking style, with thumb playing bass and fingers treble/melody, would be out. Flatpicking shouldn't be much different though.

How about chording - I'd think some of the conventional righty chords wouldn't be feasible upside down on the neck.

The upside would be, that for a person with determination and innovation, new styles could be invented that righties couldn't emulate.

Doesn't Mark Knopfler do something like that?

my guitar teacher can play both right and left upside down. in fact he plays the upside down one better than i can play normally!!..... :(

oh yeah hendrix did too.

Well....

it's too late maybe...if he had started from day one and someone corrected him it would be easier but after almost a year he may be stuck

That's a good point too. When I switched it was just about apples and apples. No way would I have given up the progress made after one year.

if you think lefty's are weird then i'm the most weird.

i'm definately righty but i play guitar lefty. i also have always played air guitar lefty. i put off playing guitar for years because i couldn't decide whether or not to play righty or lefty but it's never too late to start. i'm 24 and i've been playing guitar since i was 22. i'm glad i play lefty. in addition to carvin, schecter makes a wide variety of lefties. i play a lefty schecter c-7 blackjack. i love this guitar.

Because he's an idiot? Well, I guess that's a bit harsh,
No, you were accurate. He's an idiot. Most of the best players I've heard were lefties.

Count me in on that last group. I'm a righty who taught himself guitar. I play lefty but never reversed the strings. So basically I play backwards and upside down compared to the "correct" way. What's even funnier is that I am not alone. Ever heard the Eric Gales Band? He plays the same way.

Not that it matters 'cause I'm really a drummer! :D

tigerotool - But how is you guitar strung? Lefty or righty?

Eric Gales! That guy is awesome. Albert King played that way too.

I play left and string my guitars left. I have 2 left handed guitars: a Peavey Tracer that I hotrodded, and my ESP 5 string bass. All my acoustics are right handed strung left handed. I even have a yamaha strat copy that I play Hendrix style (he strung his left handed. He was mentioned earlier). There is a pic of me in the "newest 100 page thread" with my strat.
I don't think being left or right handed should matter musically. I think it's all about enjoying what you do and having fun with it. Music is an expression of our soul, and it should be natural. Let the kid decide for himself what he wants, and encourage and support him in it.

it's strung lefty.

It could be done couldn''t it? You'd have to flip the nut to be able to put the strings on the right way, and the knobs od certain models would cut the hell out of your forearm, but I guess it's possible.

That's how Hendrix did it. He played righty strats flipped over and strung lefty, and yes, he replaced the nuts, most likely. The knob, switch, and whammy bar placement actually made some things he did easier. SRV put a lefty bridge on his #1 strat, so he could get the same whammy setup as Hendrix.

People change things to meet their needs a lot. On the original Peavey EVH guitar, for instance, the pickup switch is flipped over, so the bridge pickup can be selected on the downstroke, when your hand is headed for that first lead note. This is something Eddie did on his guitars and wanted it to be a feature on his sig models.

Who invented the "left hand" guitar anyway? Don't see too many other instruments that have left and right hand version. Never seen a lefty piano. What about violin? Do they come in left and right versions?

good question

it all depends on how you play it ;)
