Leaving your axe out of it's case

You gotta be crazy to think I am going to leave my brand new Martin D-18 Golden Era 1934 Amberburst out of it's case and on a stand out in the middle of my studio!!!

All 8 of my guitars live in really sturdy cases.

Some where I saw these neck tie looking things that go around the neck and cover up the pickups. Keeps dust off of the pickups. Those would be nice if you have alot of dust in your house. Cant remember where I saw them. They were kind of cool

Just for my addition True, if you have saw pictures of my hanger system before, I usually have 6 to 8 guitars either hanging or on stands in my studio room.
During winter months the tuning will tend to go sharp on the hangers, really not on the stands though. My main problem with so many out-is which one to use on the song I'm working on.

Sorry for the late response...my PC has be down.

Tony...the guitars look like they are against the wall...are they, and if so, is there any kind of "padspots" behind on the wall for protection?

I think I will add some "padspots to the wall for mine...just in case.

Also Tony, is there some kind of felt on the hangers to protect the axe from the wood...?

Thanks Tony!!

I've had my Les Paul for about 14 years and the only thing on there that is really even rusted/corroded is the tiny little screws in the back plates and the ones holding the pickups in...a lot of that metal is "made in China" and die cast or something,,,,,,,,,,I wouldn't leave it out in the rain, but in the garage in the case I don't think you will have any issues.

Great info from all you guys.

From the gathering of responses, it seems the greatest danger of leaving a guitar out, is that of being knocked over, banged, something spilled on it, etc....But as was pointed out for sure...

Axe in a case, snug and safe
Axe on display, more aptly played ...:D

Yah...one has to decide for themselves the chances they are willing to take.

While I don't want my to be damaged...I see no use in having them, if I am not going to "use" them...so taking in all of the precautions...I think I will go ahead with the plan to display them and keep a close eye on them.

Those sound excellent!!

It is pretty dusty in the basement here. I try to keep my other gear covered but it is a pain in the butt sometimes.

With so many guitars, it would be nice to protect them from dust(and save me the constant dusting task)...say when I go to bed at night at least. Like pulling the covers up and putting my babies to bed with a kiss.:D

This is all good, "Dust covers", guitar cases, guitar covers, air purifiers, Unless your playing Funk, cause I heard "The dirt keeps the Funk".

I have also heard that a guitar still thinks that it's a tree for the first 25 years of it's life. So if this is true, wouldn't keeping it locked up in a case retard the natural aging process? The wood needs air to age right?

Aloha Tru,

I'm a bit late to this thread, but I guess I'll chime in with my .02. Where I live, the humidity rarely gets below 70%, so climate control is a must. That said, I keep all my instruments out and hanging (4 electric, 10 acoustic, plus a few other stringed instruments as well). I use the "String Swing" hangers, and they work just fine for me. They keep the instruments off the wall, so there's no need for any padding (unless theres earthquakes or such). In your case, I think if you monitor your humidity and make adjustments as necessary, you'll be OK. I keep my home studio at 50-55%. A bit higher than the usual 45%, but the dehumidifier has to run enough as it is, and they're real power hogs.
The other consideration is damage- not an issue if your music space is by invitation only. Leave 'em out and enjoy!

But would keeping it in the case matter on that point, once it is painted and sealed...?
What's a guitar case
A nut who spends all his money on playthings.

I did some browsing, for the String Swing hangers...and found what appears to be a fairly good deal W/no shipping on orders of 12.....http://www.amazon.com/String-Swing-Wood-Guitar-Hanger/dp/B0002GLCRC

I will also check out some humidity gauges too.

Yah..my music space is invitation only and the children of ALL ages who enter, have been trained well.:D

Thanks Horsedoc

And thanks to everyone else too, for taking the time to reply. Your input is appreciated.

No True, there is about 9" of space behind them.

I bought a sheet of felt from a local Hobby Lobby and attached it with contact cement-not a scratch yet!!

Thanks Tony!!

I'll share any info that will help you out anytime!!!;)

I haven't read all four pages of posts, but the reason I wouldn't hang all my guitars out on a wall, or put them all on stands for that matter, is that the strings will fade and rust much more quickly (I would think). Hence all mine are in cases.

Cheers

Why would that be? Unless you've got some kind of climate control (humidifier, dehumidifier, etc.) in the case, temperature and humidity are the same inside the case as out.

I have 10 guitars, all have cases - having this many means that some are played more than others, you get your favourites - sometimes it's acoustic, as now, other times I'm in electric mode. When I put a guitar in a case I wipe the strings and put a cloth across the strings and shut the case. I can open that case a year from now and find that the strings are still OK - and that happens a lot - I have a couple of guitars that I rarely play but when I do, it's nice if I don't have to replace the strings every single time.

Leaving them out on a wall or a stand in a normal house is exposing them to all sorts of temperature and humidity fluctuations - my experience is that doing this will cause the strings to go off fairly quickly.

I don't have any climate control devices where I live - no heaters or airconditioners - it doesn't get that cold, and I'm yet to work out in this new place whether I'll need aircon in the summer... (it's winter over here.. Sydney, Australia) so leaving them out will expose them to some degree of the outside climate.

Works for me... YMMV... ;)
