Leaving your axe out of it's case

When I first started playing, the conventional wisdom at the time was if it's not in the case it should be on a stand where it's supported by the body of the guitar. But nowadays, I've heard it's better to hang 'em by the headstock like they do at GC. I tend to think the latter is BS perpetuated by the makers of the Guitar Hook, 'cause I've never had any issues with my axes being on body-supporting stands.
Thanks Madz. I had been taught that way also.

I really would love to display them though. It seems a shame to hide all the different shapes and colors of them all. The idea of just grabbing one for a track and then another for a second track with ease, sounds good to me. :D

BUT...not at the expense of my babies. I am not that lazy.

No humidity damage whatsoever then?

Would that apply to your acoustics as well?

Thanks Ocnor
No humidity damage on electrics or acoustics. A lack of humidity would be more harmful because the wood might dry out and split.

sorry dude! i totally didn't mean that to come off as smart-assy, i swear.

it was meant to be more of a joking tone. :o :o :o

i know it's a legit question i'm just saying your guitars will be fine! :)
Okay!!! I just took it as such.

Otherwise I wouldn't have fired myself up!!! One of those touchy days I guess...maybe I should make it a feely day and all will be better..... :D

All is cool....sorry to bark your head off!!....thanks Zed!!! :)

If you can't fight with your friends and kiss and make up...who can ya do it with?!

I really do know what guitars are made of....wood and stuff..... :D

Well, while you are here...let's have your opinion too!!!

Your going to say give it an *adjustment* aren't you...? :D

Damn...I am such an ass.

I will go to the Cave immediately and post a thread ... :D

In an ideal world, guitars live in cases with humidifiers, or a humidity-controlled room. Mine have been on stands, some of them for fifteen years. Some of mine have a bit of forward bow that can not be corrected with the truss rod. None are unplayable, a couple are defiantely not optimal.

Would they be better if they had been cased? Dunno. They certainly would have been played less. An acceptable trade-off.

Re: hanging by the headstock: a tuned six string has about 250 or so pounds of tension between the tuners and bridge. I can't imagine adding nine pounds of guitar to that load bothering anything. The exceptions are nitro lacquer reacting with latex rubber (my Les Paul has "rack rash") or the possibility of a fall.

I don't even have cases for any of my guitars. They sit around on stands or leaned against the couch or something. They play fine, look fine, and sound fine. I've had this one strat for about 12 years now, and its never seen the inside of a case. It's perfectly fine. :)

I'll chime in on this one....

I always keep my guitars in their cases, but it's only to keep them clean and to prevent them from getting knocked over.

Just having your guitar in a case is not going to make it immune from humidity fluctuations in your house. Unless the case is hermetically sealed and environmentally controlled, the temperature and humidity inside the case are going to equalize with the conditions in your house. In case, out of case, as long as it's inside your house it's all the same.

A case can prevent temperature shock, though, if you are moving your guitar from one temp extreme to another.

As far as hanging goes, I don't know the answer to that. I would be inclined to have the guitar supported from the bottom of the body if it were going to be a long-term situation.

If I had to take them out of their cases every time - they would never get played.

:D

It's a bit of a pain. But they're clean. :D

Ummmm....how come we're all whispering?????

[SUMMER RE-RUN STORY]
I used to keep my guitars out on stands...It was way easier to pick them up & play them....until one day I pulled the pick guard off my Strat to do a repair and realized how much the exposed finish (compared to the finish under the pick guard) had faded! And they had always been kept in rooms with north-facing windows. There's apparently still a lot of UV rays that get in.

If you're down in a basement you may be OK, but beware!

Actually that's not necessarily and completely true. There are in-case humidifiers made which can increase the humidity inside a closed guitar case. While you are correct that water vapor diffuses away from inside the case, as long as it is kept charged the humidifier is able to supply it faster than it can escape.

But my guitars and basses live on stands.

For sure. I was referring to a standard, unsealed guitar case with no additional bells and whistles (or environmental control units :D ).

Actually, wouldn't hanging it by the headstock actually be relieving 9 pounds of tension? Or no wait, I'm confused. Gravity would be pulling the wooen parts apart, but the string tension is pulling the parts together, right? I suck at physics. Either way, I think it would be just fine, maybe even helpful. Might be like hanging in gravity boots to align your spine.

You ever notice the GC has all their high end acoustics hang on the wall? They usually have the cheaper ones sitting on stands. So are actually hangs with little leather straps connected to the tuning keys.

Of course they have humidifers and and dehumidifers as well.
