QUOTE;......"the australian Daniel Johns from Silverchair is one of the best singers I've ever heard"

All I can say is that you can't have heard many singers. Admittedly he is getting better but has a long way to go...........oh btw, I've been hearing Daniel's voice since he was a pimply faced kid pre Silverchair, and believe me he wasn't a singer then and still hasn't got there.

squint,

Go back and read my original post cause you have obviously missed the point. Or didn't you know that we use muscles to manipulate our vocal cords, tongue, jaw, etc..............

:)

I thought that's what you meant, but you didn't give any advice on how to train your voice and strengthen those muscles.

Here's some vocal advice

Ok..sounds like you're singing from your throat/head, and not your chest...

-When you sing, don't hunch..keep your back straight...hunching is like bending a flute..

- Don't stretch your neck

- Don't raise your chin to get out the high notes..keep your head as level as possible <without stretching/straining your neck>

- Open your MOUTH! Stick your 2 fingers farthest from your thumb in your mouth..that's how far you should be opening it.

- Open the space inside your mouth..raise your soft pallete..when you breathe in from your mouth, try to feel the cold spot on the roof of your mouth..that's your soft pallete..breathe in and focus on how that goes up..learn to raise it and keep it raised when you sing.

- take your fingers and put them on your 'temples' by your ears..the spot right next to the pointy thing on your ear that's not your lobe..open and shut your mouth until you find the spot where your opens/closes..open it all the way until your 'feel' its open..keep your mouth open that much <a tad more than 2 fingers, for me>

- Raise your chest when you sing..breathe in deeply..do you feel your 'pec' area go up/down..keep that raised

- find your 'natural voice'..let out a SIGH, but make a noise when you do it..go OOOoooooooh, starting from the highest possible sound you can make to the lowest..your voice is now going to be at it's 'natural' spot..

- Breathe ALL THE WAY..most people just breathe enough..if you're going to sing, you need to learn to breathe properly..breathe in as FAR as you can and then go some more..put your hands on your lower stomach..feel it come out when you breathe deeply? thats how you always have to breathe...Now put your hands on your lower back area, right above your ass..breathe in deeply..and go some more..you should feel some movement back there..you need to use your full lung capacity.

Some other things..

Don't clear your throat reallllly loudly before you sing..that hurts y our voice..avoid lots of caffeine, and/or artificial sweeteners..drink warm tea with honey, not sugar..don't whisper when you talk if you know you're going to have to sing that day..that strains more than speaking..speak, just keep it down a little if you need to do somethin..wear a scarf in the winter if you're going to have to sing at all that day.

FORCE yourself to do all these things EVERY TIME you sing..<Except for the bottom paragraph>..and when you're singing, don't forget them! THINK..ok, I have to breathe properly..am I raising my chin on those high notes? Do I have my soft pallete up? Can I fit 2 fingers in my mouth? Etc etc..

And..once you've learned to breathe deeply, you'll be able to fill your entire lungs fast, in like a second, just like if someone was gonna take a quick breathe..

Some people just have 'thin' sounding voices, but you can get the 'most' out of what you've got if you do that stuff..

PS..sing with vowels, unless you're trying to add some character or somethgin.

Also, if you're going for a very very high note..sing with an AH vowel, don't try to sing the word, try to sing the vowel, and then add some consonance to it as you release it..

If you concentrate on the vowels of words, you will add depth to your voice..

Instead of hoMMMMME <home> say H *OH* me...etc..

guardian, I used to do the "warm tea and honey" thing.
It seems to cause phelgm, instead I drink 6+ glasses of room
temperture water (in addition to other beverages!),
on the days I'm singing with better results than before.

There are a number of ways to effectively breath for singing.
These are outlined in the books I previously mentioned,
and if you feel adventurous you can check out the (advanced)
technique book, "The Four Voices of Man", by the operatic Bass
Jerome Hines, where he goes over a bunch of them-7 I recall.
You should be forewarned that some of the breathing methods
he talks about need the input of an expert voice coach.
One of them, in fact, has caused hernias for some opera singers!
It made my voice sound much bigger (under the supervision of my
coach) for classical singing, but for pop it's not worth the risk!
FWIW, I try to use what you may call a "natural breathing" method. Rather than inhaling a maximum amount of air, instead
inhaling the maximum COMFORTABLE amount of air and then emitting the MINIMUM amount necessary for good tone and correct pitch. It's O.K. to keep a bit of reserve breath throughout,
instead of letting it all out to help keep things more relaxed.
Hope this helps!

Just wondering

Not trying to be mean. Just wondering... Did you really make your first post on this beautiful wealth of information of a website as.... "Join a choir"?

Thanks for the advice,

well..

That's pretty funny if his first post ever was 3 words long..but it's good advice too! I highly recommend it! Check around your area colleges/community colleges...many allow community members! I still sing in the chorus even tho I graduated last spring..although I might not anymore, because I'm kinda pissed at the professor..he never said dick to me about doing CD work for him for the 4 years I went there, but this semester he has the chorus applaud the guy who did it this time..wtf is up with that..I went to his f'in house a few times too to help him with his PC at home..I think he's pissed because the last CD I did for him was screwed up by his intern..but he's not computer savvy enough to know what happened..the stupid bitch copied my master CD about 100 times at the highest possible speed, with cheap CDRs..and then they both blamed me when there were gaps..I tried to explain, but they didnt get it..so I just thought maybe the master I gave them was bad..so I gave them MY master..never seen the thing again, and the last time I asked her for it, she gave me a dirty look and said MY master was bad too..despite me once again trying to explain the intricacies of burning audio CDs..oh well :P

..plus he does a lot of religious music and 'out there' stuff that isn't very fun..although we did Carmina Burana a few years back and the Durufle Requiem w/ full orchestra was very cool..

Yes, because you are asking how to learn to sing without spending too much money. You can learn to sing, as well as learn to listen in a choir. Both are as important. Most of the good advice that is given here will also be tought in a choir. And it is great fun being with a choir (if they sing the music you like), there are outings, social contacts to go with it.
I am very serious. I have been in choirs for all my childhood, until 16yr old or so. And I sing well.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this:

Breathe with your stomach not your chest.. forcing the air up from your diaphragm.
