Which program are you referring to? If it's Fretboard Wizard, there is no scale to be listening for. It's just a little program to aid in learning the notes of each fret/string. Notes are just thrown out randomly and you have to name the note. It's kinda like that old game Math Blaster, in a way.

It's not the Fretboard wizard I'm talking about (nice comp with Math Blaster btw!). It's the Rosetta Stone thing I'm talking about. It seems like the "triple block" contains a mistake. There's no half step between the 7th and 8th degrees. Maybe I'm just looking at this thing all wrong. Quite possible!

...the thing is, those diagrams give no indication of the root notes or a major or minor tonality.
That triple block shape of 9 notes you're seeing would actually be starting on the 5th of a major scale. Are you looking at it like that? If you were playing a minor scale that shape would be starting on the 7th. Know what I mean, jelly bean?

Yes I think you must be looking at it from the wrong starting point.

Think of the lowest note of the "triple block" as the 5th degree of a major scale. I can't remember which key it gave the example in, but I think it was C. If that's the case, the first note of the "triple block" pattern would be G. Therefore it would go: G-A-B-C-D-E-F-G-A. That would be the whole triple block series there.

Or you could say the triple block spans from the root of the Mixolydian mode to the 9th. (G to A)

btw - those dots in the position they are shown reflect a C major / A minor scale.....that might help you visualize things.
