Hey,

It's already for two days I'm trying to record a good lead vocal. However, the lead always sounds pretty far away ( not close enough and also not full). Is it because I need a condensor micro and not a dynamic (I only 2 dynamics ( shure SM 57 & SM 58)? Or can I help this out with a good mix?

hmm...you oshould be able to do something decent with the 57/58 mics. Can you describe the rest of the signal path?

the Sm57 and 58 are essentially the same thing, except for the shape of the grille. Just be careful about the proximity effect. the 58 has it a lot more than the 57 because of the shape.

The not so obvious thing for me was the mic in. As I'm learning as I go.

I wasn't using a good mic preamp. That will make or break the vocals bar none. After hearing the good folks in here preach it, I started looking into a good mic pre, ESPECIALLY with a dynamic mic. As Kryogh suggested, what are you running it into?

FWIW - I'm using my 57s/58 again since I've gotten an RNP. Sounds nice. Even with acoustic guitar. You've got to have the quiet gain for those mics to sound good on quieter sources.

Hello,

I'm running it into a Behringer eurorack mx 602A. Then it goes into my layla. Then I insert a compressor, a eq en a desesser. I also duplicated the track. I panned the original to the right and the duplicate to the left with a little delay on it.

Thanks for answering me guys,

Thats it.

The pres on that Behringer are killing you. I'm not as much of a Behringer hater as many in here since I only have one mixer. But that is exactly what I used first and it was really bad. Now I have the RNP and loving every bit of it. Like night and day. Now I use that bastard for everything.

Then I'm lucky. It's not mine. It's my friend's mixer.

Thanks for the advice

A good preamp will make a 57 sound great for vocals. What mixer/preamps do you have?

I do vocals with SM57 as well with Joemeek preamp.

I have the Beh602a as well, and it can give a decent result.

The thing I find with singing with SM57, for a good vocal sound, you need to be "eating" the mic... get real close. But you also need a pop filter with it....

I use a 57 for vocals thru a radio shack DJ mixer (preamp) and I can get "ok" results. As Leeking said...a pop filter is a must...about 4" away w/ your mouth about 2" from that.

I'm running the signal into a behringer eurorack mx 602a. But dont ask me what the preams are? I never worked with a pop filter before. But when you work with a screen, you're loosing proximity? Can I make it myself?

Thanks

Can I make it myself?
Yes, a coat hanger and a pair of pantyhose. Form the hanger in a 8" circle and cut the toe ont of the pantyhose. Thread the hose on the hanger, and there you go, dirt cheap pop filter. Use black hose, it looks more like a real filter, and the singer wont realize that they are singing through someones socks.
