Layering Drum Tracks with Midi Triggers?

Has anyone here ever successfully layered midi trigger output with live drum tracks with positive results? I'm thinking of recording both midi trigger data along with the live audio to blend together for a super mega ultra awesome drum sound... Bad idea?

People trigger drum samples all the time, whether from proper triggers on the drums or by using plugins like Drumagog... go for it :)

Are you talking about blending multiple sounds? Like your live, recorded snare drum mixed with samples? I can't see why not. If it sounds good, go nuts.

Edit: People blend different guitar signals all the time. Like record the track with one amp and one guitar, then switch around to a different amp, maybe a different guitar, and double the track for a nice layered sound. I wonder how it'd work with drums.

I've done it on stage and it was great. There shouldn't be any problems but you might have to tweak the MIDI track left or right a hair to get it to line up perfectly with the audio, or maybe it will sound fatter if they are offset.

I thought of using triggers at a gig and triggering a drum module that went through a reverb unit, and then only using the reverb portion of the sound through the pa. It would be a way of adding reverb to my drums live without mic'ing the set.

I do a re-amping technique with my Roland TD10 drum module. I use the analog ins and outs to trigger it instead of MIDI.

It works great.
