For anyone who might be interested, I spoke with Soundcraft Tech support (US office in Nashville) this afternoon.

Apparently the new E-series mixers use the exact same mic pres as the M series (which, by the way, are almost identical to those used in the Ghost).

The EQ section, which to me is the most valuable part of these mixers, is also exactly the same as those used in the M series.

The E-series is just basically a stripped-down version of the M, with less features, less bells and whistles, etc. Most important to keep in mind, though, is that the inserts are pre-EQ. Kind of a bummer, but certainly not a deal-killer if you're merely looking for a bunch of channels of very inexpensive, high bang/buck mic pres.

Aside from having less headroom, the mic pres in these guys do have a sound that I'd put on par with much more expensive standalone units. Not world-class, but very high on the project studio scale. Better than the Wackie on most things, but I might be a little hesitant to use them on drums due to less-than-ideal headroom. But get yourself a couple of these here, and you shouldn't have to worry about the headroom issue.

I was interested in the LX-7. Is this a decent console? I am looking for a replacement in the near future. You seem to know about soundcraft, so I value your opinion.

I don't know Jack about Soundcraft, other than some experience I have playing around with a few of their mixers. :D

And what I posted above.

Sorry.

Almost identical to Ghost pres, huh? I'm sure you've seen the threads here fairly recently taking that statement to task. Originally the party line was that they were the SAME pres as in the Ghost. A bit of misleading hype that kinda rubs me the wrong way. How close are they anyway? Is a Mackie pre almost the same as a Ghost?

I guess every mixer pre is pretty much "almost the same" as the other, right? :D

I know, I had a problem with that one, too.

One would think they actually might be better in a smaller mixer, anyway. Think about the power requirements, and how much less stress there is on a smaller mixer to do other things, etc. Original party line was that the Ghost suffered somewhat do to that very thing -- untill someone came along with a mod that beefed up the power supply, which supposedly helped out a lot.

Huh?????, post-eq inserts are almost unusable with compressors.....
I wouldn`t even consider buying a console with post-eq inserts....

Yea, but the reason you buy a Soundcraft is for the EQ. If you have a brain, that is.

I bought a Soundcraft for the pretty blinking lights.

The faders on the Ghost are solid and silky smooth. I have heard the M faders are a little chinzy. Nothing can be worse than Alesis faders though.
